Charlyne's Thoughts
From the Heart of a Stander

Archive: July 2007

Each day Charlyne communicates with you formally through "Charlyne Cares" and our broadcast programs. This is her way of communicating with you informally, so that you might be helped by reading what God is doing in her life. Entries will not be made here daily, but as the Lord leads Charlyne to share from the heart of a stander or returned prodigal. On other days, Charlyne’s husband, Bob, a prodigal husband who returned after divorce 20 years ago, will share what the Lord has placed on his heart.

July 10, 2007

Sunday after lunch, six year old Ryan was coming to spend the afternoon with us. As we passed The Forum, where Rejoice Pompano meets, I said, "Ryan, can you get your Mom or Dad to bring you to Bible study tomorrow night?" My usually chatty grandson was quiet. I knew that Charlyne and I would be talking about the 20th anniversary of our remarriage, and what better illustration to "Why Stand?" than a grandson?

After half a minute, I repeated my question to the quiet kid in the back seat. "Ryan, think you can come tomorrow night?"

Ryan's reply was beyond his age: "I really can't say."

Monday evening Charlyne and I discovered that Ryan had been holding a secret about the 20th anniversary celebration that our children, their spouses, and their children had planned for us for Monday night. How that kid must have been tempted to spill the beans to his Grandpa, but he didn't disclose a thing. I did not even get a hint of "I know a secret," nor a stifled giggle, that something was up.

There is a lesson for each of us in this incident. If a six year old can hold his reply, why do we feel we need to share everything we hear, everything we experience, and yes, everything a prodigal spouse does? More marriage would be restored, in less time, and with less pain if we could each learn to carry out Charlyne's advice and "Zip the lips."

Monday night was beautiful. All of our children and their spouses were there, along with Ryan and all of his brothers, sisters, and cousins. By the way, one of the gifts Charlyne received was lips with a zipper!

God Bless,

Bob Steinkamp
