8 Scriptures to Pray Over Your Marriage

When my parents were going through a divorce, my mom felt like she ran out of words to pray. That is when she began focusing on the Scriptures and praying God’s Word. We want to share some Scriptures that you can pray over your marriage.

  1. The Bible shows us how we can love our spouses the way Christ loves us. Pray and ask the Lord to love your spouse this way.

If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  1 Corinthians 13:2-7

  1. There may come times when you want to run from your marriage. You are not in a contract; you are in a covenant marriage. Put in the work on your marriage without running away. Ask the Lord to give you endurance for each situation you will face in your marriage.

“Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”  Mark 10:9

  1. How many problems could be avoided if we were patient with each other? Humility is one way of telling your spouse that they matter. Their opinions and feelings are important. Ask the Lord to give you patience and humility towards your spouse.

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.  Ephesians 4:2-3

  1. The apostle Paul had important words for the church in Corinth, which are still important today. If we are acting in love, we will not have selfish attitudes, anger, or bitterness. Pray and ask the Lord to equip you to act in love as you deal with your spouse.

Do everything in love.  1 Corinthians 16:14

  1. Be quick to forgive. Holding onto past hurts and unforgiveness doesn’t damage the offender. It damages the victim of the hurt. Ask the Lord to give you grace for your spouse. Be quick to offer forgiveness, even when you feel it isn’t deserved. We were forgiven by Christ, so we can forgive others.

Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.  Ephesians 4:32

  1. Your spouse needs your encouragement. Find ways to be purposeful about being an encourager in their daily life. Ask the Lord to give you a servant’s heart as you seek to encourage your spouse.

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.  1 Thessalonians 5:11

  1. The Lord has a beautiful plan for your marriage. Strive to seek His will as you and your spouse plan your future.

Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.  Proverbs 16:3

  1. We have an enemy who doesn’t want to see your marriage succeed. We need to be on guard against the devil’s schemes. Ask the Lord to remove temptations to look outside your marriage for love or affection. If you are feeling tempted, tell someone. Tell your spouse. Work through it together.

Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth. “The man who hates and divorces his wife,” says the Lord, the God of Israel, “does violence to the one he should protect,” says the Lord Almighty. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful.  Malachi 2:15-16

Praying for your spouse and your marriage is such a beautiful gift. We know that prayer changes things! Will you commit to praying for your spouse each day? Expand this list and add scriptures the Lord reveals to you. We can’t wait to hear how you see your marriage change because of your faithful prayers.

God bless,
