Restored and Redeemed

Has your marriage been restored? Restored & Redeemed is a devotional for those in a restored marriage.

A Funny Thing Happened

Years ago, there used to be a column titled “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Church,” which was popular. That column reminds me of the many “funny” things that happened to me on the way to a restored marriage. Things like:

  • I took a girlfriend to a Christmas pageant that unexpectedly included a dramatization of the parable of the prodigal son.
  • I was spending New Year’s Eve alone on the side of a deserted highway with a broken-down car. A plane crashed into a highway five minutes after I passed the same spot.
  • I intended to call the girlfriend and accidentally dialed my wife instead.
  • Waking up and needed an extra second to remember why my wife wasn’t there.
  • I accidentally called my girlfriend by my wife’s name.
  • Having an out-of-town boss say, “Bring your wife….”
  • I heard many sermon illustrations that seemed to be aimed right at me.

Yes, a lot of not-so-funny and unexplainable things happened to me, but many good things happened as well. Foremost the Lord gave me a new wife. It was the same Charlyne who had that funny laugh and still didn’t understand my jokes, but our Lord had made her into a new person. It was hard to comprehend how she could still love me and want me back after all I had done, but she did. The secret? My wife’s love had become unconditional, regardless of what was happening.

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.  1 Peter 4:8

That’s just the way God loves us. Sure, I needed to do a lot of changing. Previously Charlyne had tried to get me to change, and she failed. Now, she told her best friend, Jesus, and He would convict me. The same habits that brought down our marriage were being removed. Don’t think we are perfect because we are not. We are human but being transformed.

Now that our marriage has been re-established on Jesus Christ, there’s a difference. When we have a difference, we take it to Him instead of taking it out on each other.

The best thing that happened came about without warning. On July 7, 1987, this prodigal drove 100 miles in from my “far country,” knocked on my wife’s office window, took her to lunch, and remarried her. I really didn’t think I loved her, but I did what I knew deep inside that God was leading me to do. Since that day, the Lord has continued to build a love inside us that I never dreamed was possible. Back then, I did not think anyone else had ever experienced what was happening to me. I was wrong. God continues to heal hurting homes today, regardless of the circumstances.

Can you list the “funny things” that God used to bring you home? Don’t ever stop remembering what God has delivered you from.

I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works and consider what your hands have done.  Psalm 143:5

God bless,
