All the Pieces

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  Jeremiah 29:11

Sarah surveyed the mess on the family room floor. She had worked so hard on that jigsaw puzzle. She only had that one section of ocean to finish up. But her little brother and her big Retriever had messed everything up. One toss of the tennis ball and it had all come crashing down. Everything she had worked so hard on was now laying in pieces beneath the overturned card table.

Mom came in to survey the damage, her little brother close behind, hiding behind Mom’s legs. “Oh Sarah,” Mom said. “All that work and now it’s in pieces again. I’m so sorry for you.”

“Me, too,” her little brother piped up. “I didn’t know Miley would take a shortcut through your puzzle. I’m really sorry Sarah.”

Even though she was upset about the puzzle, she wasn’t actually mad at her little brother. How could she be when he looked at her with those big brown eyes and upturned nose. “That’s OK,” she told him. “Let’s just pick up all these pieces and you can help me put them back together again.”

Brother and sister set to work gathering up puzzle pieces as Mom righted the card table. All three worked through the afternoon, rebuilding the puzzle, helping each other with the more difficult sections. By late afternoon, the puzzle was almost finished. But here and there a piece was missing. A hole in the white cloud, a spot of table showing through the ocean, two pieces missing from the boat. Though the pieces were small, they were important. Sarah was disappointed.

“Let’s leave it for now,” Mom said. “Maybe the missing pieces will show up later. They have to be around here somewhere.”

That night as Sarah lay in bed thinking about the puzzle, she realized that it was kind of like her family. Most the pieces were there and it looked OK, but it wasn’t the way it should be. There were some important pieces missing and one of the biggest was her dad. Sarah prayed for the missing pieces in her life.

Yet I leave it all in the Lord’s hand; I will trust God for my reward.”  Isaiah 49:4b (NLT)

“Lord,” she began, “You know all about our family. It’s like that puzzle with some of the pieces missing. It just isn’t right. You know how much we love and miss Dad and want him to come home. I know that You want him to come home, too. So even though things are kind of a mess right now, I know that You are working to make them right. I know that when we pray to You, You will hear and answer. I know that You will help us find all the missing pieces and put them back together. Thank You Lord that You will make our family whole again. Amen.”

When Sarah came down to breakfast the next morning, there on her plate were the missing puzzle pieces. One piece of cloud, one piece of ocean, and two pieces of boat. Mom had found them in Miley’s dog bed that morning. Sarah took the pieces to the family room and carefully locked them into place. Now the puzzle was complete and Sarah knew it was God’s way of telling her that soon her family, too, would be complete.

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.  Romans 8:29 (NLT)

God bless
