Mark 10 Nine

Are you happily married and looking for tips on maintaining a God-honoring marriage? This weekly devotional will give you encouragement for your marriage.

Are You Looking Down the Wrong Path in Your Marriage?

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.  Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. 1 Peter 5:8-9

During a visit to see Bob’s sister, Donna, and her husband, Bob, they took me for a boat ride late in the afternoon. Bob and Donna lived on a beautiful ocean marsh.

As we went toward the ocean, we saw over 20 bottlenose dolphins swimming around us. As we approached the inlet, I could see an old lighthouse standing tall. This reminded me of God’s ability to shine a light in the darkness of our lives and guide us to safe harbor.

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

After taking in the beautiful scenery, we headed back toward the house. We rode through the many ocean marsh channels. I was amazed at how my brother-in-law, Bob, knew his way through what felt like a maze of water as we found our way home. The tide was coming in, and the scenery of the tall grass in the ocean marsh quickly changed.

As we drove blindly through one channel, the motor started running aground. Thinking that we were in the wrong channel, we deviated off the path and attempted to cross an area to reach the other channel that appeared to be deeper. That was just an illusion as we found shallow water.

This is what can happen in a marriage. As hurting marriages start running aground, one spouse can deviate off the path of their covenant marriage. They may stray to another channel where the water appears deep, but they actually find an old oyster bed of shells disguised as deep water. Sin leads us astray.

A person running from God may find themselves stuck and run aground looking for happiness in the wrong places. They may be looking at substances, pornography, or even another person for peace that can only come through Jesus Christ.

It took effort from Bob and the motor to get us unstuck and back on the right channel heading towards the house. If we didn’t get unstuck, we would have been forced to wait for the tide to change.

Temptations may come against your marriage, suggesting another path will lead to true happiness, joy, intimacy, or love. Be aware of what is happening in your marriage and aware of the lies from the enemy that may be tempting you or your spouse to look for contentment outside of your marriage.

When you stay on the path the Lord has for you, He will guide you to work together when difficulties come your way. He is faithful!

Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Psalm 25:4

God bless,
