Are you happily married and looking for tips on maintaining a God-honoring marriage? This weekly devotional will give you encouragement for your marriage.

Are You Struggling with Unbelief in Your Marriage?

The Gospel of Mark, chapter nine, records Jesus healing a boy with an evil spirit. A full description of the boy’s condition is given in verses 21 and 22, perhaps so we will realize this was not a temporary condition. Could this be compared to some marriages today? We often tell our marriage story, always remembering to include details to convince others how hopeless our marriage situation had become.

At the end of verse 22, we see the boys’ father asking Jesus for help.

Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?” “From childhood,” he answered. “It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.”  Mark 9:21-22

Again, we are reminded of some who are having struggles in their marriage. They have brought the problems to Jesus, but their “if” remains.

Look at the reply of Jesus.

“‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for one who believes.”  Mark 9:23

A few verses later, we read that Jesus took the boy by the hand, and he stood up.

For that amazed family, “if” had suddenly become “when” as their son was healed.

Where is your marriage today? Is the hope of a healthy marriage an “if” or a “when?” An “if” has an easy slide into “never” when circumstances go wrong. Your “when,” firmly rooted and grounded in Jesus Christ, will not move. Granted, the winds of circumstances may cause it to shake, but “when” is never moved.

In our front yard, we have a huge black olive tree. That tree is so well rooted that we need to have a problem root dug out somewhere across the yard from time to time. That tree will be a “when” for the next hurricane season. Out back, my wife has a small hibiscus tree. Pretty as it is, when a storm strikes, that tree will be an “if” on surviving. Is your marriage an olive or hibiscus tree?

When you talk with your spouse, how about speaking of times “when” things are easier, and God has done a work in your home, not “if” He heals your priceless family. Don’t give up on your marriage! Jesus looks at it and repeats what we read in Mark 9:23, “If you can?” Everything is possible for the one who believes.

God bless,
