Can You Be Patient While You Wait?

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.  Romans 12:12

The street in front of the post office where we receive our mail is a driver’s free-for-all this time of year. Although it’s well-marked with handicapped parking, no U-turn signs, and no stopping zones, there’s just not enough parking.

A favorite trick of some drivers is to double park in the street while they go inside. The other day with other drivers honking, a tourist in a rental car found his parking place in the roadway. A police officer pulled up behind the empty car. That visitor then made his second mistake; screaming at the officer. You can imagine what happens next. I’ve never seen Pompano post office drivers as obedient and courteous as they were while that officer was “chatting” with the errant driver.

Many prodigal spouses treat God like the tourist treated that police officer. They willfully disobey God’s law and then scream at Him in defiance. They shout by giving up pulpits for pleasure. They shout at God by exchanging families for fantasies. They shout at Him by hurting instead of helping. They shout when they use their family’s dollars for their futile desires.

Everyone witnessing the post office incident thought shouting at the authority of our city to be foolish, except for the man who was doing the shouting. Just like you witnessing your prodigal spouse shouting in defiance at a Holy God and you know it to be foolish.

I am certain there came a time that afternoon when that tourist regretted what he had done. Charlyne and I pray there will soon come a time when your prodigal realizes what a mistake it was to shout at the authority of our Holy God. The repentance of the one you love will be the stepping stone to a restored marriage.

There’s something else I noticed at the post office. The officer did not try to stop the tourist’s screaming. I know it was not pleasant, but the officer knew who would win. Why does God put up with the lifestyle of many prodigals? He knows Who will win that battle.

Can you be patient while your prodigal “comes to their senses?” It is always worth it to wait on God’s perfect timing.

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”  2 Corinthians 10:3-5

Thank you for Bob’s perspective! Jesus help us be patient like You.

Great are You Lord
You give life, You are love
You bring light to the darkness
You give hope, You restore every heart that is broken
