Challenge Yourself this Summer

The Mighty One, God, the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to the place where it sets. From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth.  Psalm 50:1-2

Did you think it would ever get here? Mid-term tests and badminton in the gym, walking to school in the dark and the cold, praying for one – just one, please – snow day, commiserating with your friends on the phone about all the homework Mrs. T piled on that week…. it’s all behind you now. And the summer stretches ahead of you with a chance to sleep a little later and see your friends a little more and spend more time doing the things you really want to do.

So what ARE the things you really want to do? I know when I asked several of my students what their summer plans were, they mostly involved video games or the computer or the television. May I challenge you this summer to challenge yourself?

Challenge yourself to spend more time outdoors this summer. What better opportunity than when the sun is shining for 14 or 15 hours each day? That gives you lots of time to be outside, taking advantage of the extra daylight that God has so graciously given us, enjoying the shade of the trees He has provided for us, feeling the gentle breezes He sends our way. Soak up that sunshine!

You take care of the earth and water it, making it rich and fertile. The river of God has plenty of water; it provides a bountiful harvest of grain, for you have ordered it so. You drench the plowed ground with rain, melting the clods and leveling the ridges. You soften the earth with showers and bless its abundant crops. You crown the year with a bountiful harvest; even the hard pathways overflow with abundance.  Psalm 65:9-10 (NLT)

Challenge yourself to be a little less whiny this summer. You know what I’m talking about. When Mom asks you to fold the laundry, do it with a smile. When Dad asks you to mow the grass, don’t put it off. If your little brother or sister asks you to play a game with them, be willing to take the time. The Lord delights in a cheerful giver.

Challenge yourself to learn a new sport or get better at one you already do. There’s nothing like physical exercise to make you feel good inside and out. Or maybe you can find a group of friends and organize a neighborhood baseball game or joint swim time. Whatever you choose to do, remember that the Lord has given you the ability to do it.

I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.”  Psalm 16:2

Challenge yourself to read a book. I’m talking about a REAL book. Not a comic book or graphic novel. A book that will teach you something or make you think. The public library often has extended hours during the summer months. You’re sure to find something that interests you.

Challenge yourself to be more helpful. Not just at home, but in your neighborhood or community. Help that older neighbor get his bushes trimmed up. Volunteer to weed someone’s garden. Get involved with charity events or walk-a-thons or community garage sales. Giving to others gives us so much more in return.

Do not be interested only in your own life, but be interested in the lives of others. In your lives you must think and act like Christ Jesus.  Philippians 2:4-5 (ICB)

Challenge yourself to memorize scripture. Start with one a week and then try two or even three. I think you’ll be surprised at how easy this really is. Having God’s Word in our hearts and in our minds is the greatest weapon we can wield against attacks from the enemy.

Challenge yourself to pray more. If you just pray in the morning, pray at night, too. Take everything you do this summer to the Lord in prayer. If your family doesn’t have a regular devotional time, suggest they start one. You can be a prayer leader as well as prayer warrior for your family this summer.

“Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.  Jeremiah 29:12-13

Praying for a wonderful summer for all of you!

God bless
