Christ, The Church and Marriage

Each week we share guest devotionals. The views expressed below are those of the writer and may not reflect the views of Rejoice Marriage Ministries or the Steinkamps.
Has the Lord placed a devotional on your heart that you would like to share with other standers?

Ephesians 5:22-33 speaks on marriage. It says how a wife is to be towards her husband and how a husband is to be towards his wife. It clearly speaks on the parallel of marriage and Christ and the church. Ephesians 5:23 (NKJV) says, For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church. Now God is spirit and He wants to make Himself known physically. No one can actually see the relationship between Christ and the church, but marriage is a physical representation of that.

The enemy only comes to steal, kill, and destroy everything God created. It is clear in Genesis that God created marriage. It’s clear, soon after, the enemy came to destroy marriage. Which, by the way, Satan could have come to destroy animals, plants, or land but he shows up to destroy man and marriage. So if from the beginning of creation, the enemy came to destroy the first marriage, why would we think he isn’t doing the same thing now? If he even knew what Christ would be accomplishing when He died upon that cross, he would have done much more to stand in the way of Jesus. Jesus, the head, fought for His body, us, the church. In everything, in all our sin, He died for us. In Ephesians 5:25 (NKJV) it says, Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her. This is what Christ did for us out of love. He saved us.

The enemy doesn’t want that for us or for marriages. He wants to destroy the physical aspect of Christ and the church. Therefore, someone in the covenant is called to stand that God may be glorified. If everyone divorced, whether because of adultery or something else, how would the Father be glorified? What would that say about Christ and the church? The Bridegroom and the Bride? Did Christ not die for us? Give Himself up for us while we were in sin? Is not adultery sin? Was the church faithful to Him? How many times did the Father plead with His people throughout scripture because of adultery committed towards Him? Read Hosea. What the Father had Hosea do wasn’t to make him look like a fool. He was showing the people what they were doing to Him. BUT GOD never gave up on us. He even went as far as making a new covenant; a better covenant through the blood of Jesus Christ (Hebrews 8:6).

If marriages, husbands and wives are a representation of Christ and the church, and He went to the point of death for her, why wouldn’t He be calling you to stand? Are we not called to imitate Christ?1 Corinthians 11:1(NKJV) — Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ. It says in 1 Corinthians 7:16 (NKJV) — For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife? Also in 1 Peter 3:1-2 (NKJV) — Wives, likewise, be submissive to your own husbands, that even if some do not obey the word, they, without a word, may be won by the conduct of their wives, when they observe your chaste conduct accompanied by fear.

We must stand in the gap using the Word of God, which is our weapon, to fight the enemy. We are fighting that God’s kingdom be established on earth as it is in heaven. God is using us to establish righteousness. To establish right order as it says in 1 Corinthians 11:3 (NKJV) — But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God . Whether it’s the husband not leading and being a good head or the wife not being submissive, someone must stand for the righteousness of God to be established in the marriage.

We must allow God to show His power through us. As it says in Ezekiel 22:30 (NKJV) — ‘I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found no one.’ God wants to save our spouse and He wants to save our marriage, but someone is to stand in the gap. We must stand in the gap for our spouse. If not us, then who? We must allow ourselves to be used by God so that His glory would be revealed through us and our circumstances, that all would see, whether believer or unbeliever, that He is the God who saves and restores. Keep standing! Keep believing because our Father is faithful!

The enemy wants to destroy marriages because ultimately, he wants to destroy the church, but Christ has already defeated him so know that we have already been given the victory!
