Getting Rid of the Pests in Your Marriage

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”  Matthew 7:24-27

Charlyne heard one of those Florida critters inside our home. I made a quick phone call to the pest control technician who came out to solve our problem. He asked me to walk around the house with him.

“We need to find where he got in, so we can fix that area, and you won’t be bothered anymore,” he remarked as we walked. Watching the technician methodically check each area, I thought about how something else had entered this same home many years ago. If only someone had been around then to warn us about all the small openings where Satan could enter a marriage. We incorrectly assumed that most marriages were expected to have “bugs” and that we could control all that was happening. Those little pests seemed to grow, and our marriage problems became uncontrollable.

Not until after we had such an infestation of the enemy that we were divorced did Charlyne, working with the Lord alone, start to do her “pest control” work. The result was a restored marriage. That is when I began to work alongside my wife, ensuring our marriage was secure, and we left no cracks for the enemy to come in and disrupt our marriage again.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.  John 10:10

I encourage you to walk through your home, asking God what He would have you do so that you might “exterminate” the bugs from your marriage. Talk to your spouse and figure out if there are areas of your marriage where methodical work needs to be done.

No one understands like Jesus.

You may realize that there are cracks in your marriage, but recognize that your spouse is not interested in doing the hard work to change the situation. What should you do? Foremost, seek the will of God. Avoid looking in the wrong places for the right answers. Jesus will meet every need. Allow Him to give you an unconditional love for your spouse, a love that does not depend on the circumstances. Become a student of the Word. Find a prayer partner who believes in marriage and will agree with you in prayer. Finally, allow God to change you first. Regardless of what bugs you discovered, there is likely work to be done in the lives of two people in your marriage. Don’t ever forget that no one understands like Jesus.

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.  1 John 4:7

God bless,
