God’s Teaching Falls like Rain

Each week we share guest devotionals. The views expressed below are those of the writer and may not reflect the views of Rejoice Marriage Ministries or the Steinkamps.

Has the Lord placed a devotional on your heart that you would like to share with other standers?

Lately I’ve been trying harder than ever to surrender to God’s will, to stop deciding how to fix my circumstances, to let God. “Lord, what You will, when You will, how You will.” Still, I constantly battle worry and anxiousness, doubt, despair.

I had to appear in court today to get an emergency stay. The people who bought my prodigal’s share of our business when I couldn’t run it alone anymore never paid me, making a terrible financial situation beyond bearing. When they stopped paying rent, I had to take them to court to avoid eviction and a massive lawsuit from my landlord. I can’t afford a lawyer, so I’ve been representing myself, learning to navigate the Supreme Court system, trying to trust God’s will for whatever happened.

Indeed, let God be true but every man a liar. As it is written: “That You may be justified in Your words and may overcome when You are judged.”  Romans 3:4 (NKJV)

I asked a stander friend to pray for me, and she prayed that God would be with me in court and that justice would rain down on me. At court I was told I had been assigned another judge for just this meeting; my judge was out. The lawyer standing next to me heard the new judge’s name and said, “Oh, matrimonial?” I said, “Oh no, not at all!” and explained the case to her and she kept saying, “I don’t understand why they assigned you to matrimonial.” I didn’t think much about it.

For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.  Isaiah 55: 8 (NKJV)

I prayed without ceasing as I walked to the next building. It was supposed to be sunny, but it started to rain. I waited to see the judge, praying, and had to listen to the case before mine. It was a custody battle and it was heartbreaking. The father told the judge that his three-year old child now called his stepfather “Daddy” and him, “Other Daddy.”

Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword before the king. And the king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to one, and half to the other.”  1 Kings 3:24-25 (NKJV)

I remembered that this is one reason I am standing; listening to them it was so obvious that divorce had destroyed four lives.

“So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate “  Matthew 19:6 (NKJV)

I began to pray for that couple and their child, that God could somehow do the impossible. When the custody hearing took a break, the ex-husband sat behind me. I felt a call on my heart and asked him if he was a Christian. He said he was Hindu but that all paths led to God and said, “I’ll try anything.” There was not much time and we had to be very quiet, so I just told him to look up Rejoice Marriage Ministries to find comfort for what he was facing. He seemed so grateful. Then I was called, gave my testimony, and the judge issued a court order that these buyers pay rent until our case is heard.

“But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.”  Mark 13:11 (NKJV)

I left the court in disbelief. Everyone at the self-represented help center had told me not to bother with this emergency stay, as it was unlikely any judge would grant it. And as I left, watching the rain fall, it hit me suddenly how justice had not only rained down on me, but that it had rained down on me in the MATRIMONIAL court, for a case that, at least in the natural, had nothing to do with matrimony! But God put me right there in matrimonial court to see Him work!

But the story of God’s hand isn’t over. Much later in the day, I was way uptown, very far from the court, to mail the papers for this case at a post office that was open late. I am never in that neighborhood and never at that time. As I biked down the avenue, late, anxious, rushing, I passed a church and looked up. And standing in front of the church was a man I knew and for whom I had been looking. He was a formerly Hindu man for whom I had served as godmother earlier this summer, two years after I myself was baptized into the Catholic faith from Judaism, all a result of my stand. I had been looking for him since that day but hadn’t seen him at our church, which was quite far from there.

“For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”  Luke 11:10 (NKJV)

I stopped and called to him; at first he didn’t know me. I said, “I was at your baptism, I’m your godmother!” He was in tears that I remembered him and kept thanking me, completely overjoyed. We just stood there, amazed, understanding so deeply that it was all God, that God was reminding us how close He truly was to us.

My stand is so long, and the way is so hard. I know I won’t give up, though lately I feel always in deep death-lock battle with the overwhelming desire to give up. But today God spoke, and spoke again and again, reminding me how…

…God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.  Romans 8:28

Beautifully written! The scriptures you’ve embedded shield you in His strength. How can anyone argue with the Word of God?

”Would you discredit my justice? Would you condemn me to justify yourself?” Job‬ ‭40‬:‭8‬ ‭NIV

God showed up for you in matrimonial court! How amazing and prophetic!

When we grow weary he delivers *perfectly* timed encounters meant to aid his Will and boost our faith. We see God’s work in situations that only He Himself could have orchestrated. God is the coincidence. When we cry for justice He delivers. His presence is evident. His fingerprints are all over it.

”The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.” ‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5‬:‭24‬ ‭NIV‬‬

When our will is in line with His there is only victory.

”And this is the boldness we have in God’s presence: that if we ask God for anything that agrees with what he wants, he hears us. If we know he hears us every time we ask him, we know we have what we ask from him.“ 1 John‬ ‭5‬:‭14‬-‭15‬ ‭NCV‬‬

“But Abraham never doubted. He believed God, for his faith and trust grew ever stronger, and he praised God for this blessing even before it happened.” Romans 4:20 TLB

Thank you for sharing. ❤️ Your testament of God ‘s work in your life has boosted my faith.

Thank you Evelyn for sharing your testimony! It is exactly what I needed. I have been standing for 15 long, excruciating months. I have tried time and time again to surrender it all to God. To let go….but I haven’t been able to completely release the wheel. Just this morning I wrote in my prayer app how “I surrender it all to you Lord”. I pray for God’s love and mercy to rain down on all of us.
