He Knows My Name

Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but because he was short he could not see over the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way. When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.  Luke 19:1-6

One summer, when a hurricane came through our town, President George Bush flew in to give a speech. Since his brother, Jeb Bush, was our Governor, he joined him. We didn’t know he was coming. My husband and I were at my parents’ house with our kids. We noticed black SUVs driving by and decided to hop in our van and see what was happening. They all stopped a few blocks away in a church parking lot. A crowd was gathering as people in the area realized what was happening. We were screened by security and were able to get close to the President and Governor so we could listen to their speeches.

A similar scene took place in Jericho. Jesus was passing through town, and a crowd gathered to hear Him. Zacchaeus was one of those people in the crowd. Zacchaeus was a tax collector. That was not a position that was looked upon as respectable to the Jews. The people in Israel felt like tax collectors were getting wealthy off them so they were a disliked group. The Bible describes Zacchaeus as a vertically challenged person… in other words, he was short. Since he couldn’t see very well, he climbed up into a tree for a better view.

As Jesus passes, He says, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” Can you even imagine what Zacchaeus was thinking??? “Who, me?” “You want to stay at my house?” All I can think about is when President Bush was standing five feet from me. “Lori, come here! I must stay at your house today.” Let’s be honest: I would have had a minor heart attack and tried to figure a way to rush home so I could throw the unfolded baskets of laundry in a closet, give a quick cleaning to the bathroom, and do a mini-makeover before the President showed up for a slumber party.

When I opened my Bible to read a passage in Luke, I noticed that I had written in the margin of my Bible, “Jesus knows my name.” Did you catch that? Jesus didn’t point to some random person and say, “Hey, you! It’s your lucky day. I’m coming home with you.” He spoke to Zacchaeus by name.

I remember when a monumental thing happened in our little city of Pompano Beach: a Chick-fil-A opened!! Exciting, right? My family loves going there to eat. It doesn’t matter if we are grabbing a bite to eat on the way to Wednesday night church or if I am meeting a friend for breakfast; we usually choose Chick-fil-A.

Do you know why I enjoyed going there? Because they knew my name. My family likes to joke it is because I go there too often, but it is a company policy to refer to their customers by name. Don’t you enjoy it when someone says your name? I would much rather hear, “Lori, your waffle fries are ready,” than “Number 204, your waffle fries are ready.”

Do you know that Jesus knows your name? Just like He knew who Zacchaeus was and called him by name, The Creator of this world knows your name. You matter to Him!

You may be facing challenges in your marriage. Each day may feel like a struggle. It may have been a while since you heard your spouse call you by that pet name you used to hear. Some days it may feel like nobody cares about you.

Jesus knows your name!

Jesus cared enough about you to die for your sins. Don’t ever let the enemy tell you that you don’t matter. You matter to the One who matters most.

He has not abandoned you. He hears your prayers. He cares. He knows exactly what is happening in your life. Trust that today. When you can’t trust anything else, trust in His character.

He knows your name!

God bless,
