For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
Christmas is on its way! Are you making plans to start decorating your home? All three of my kids have started getting their homes ready for Christmas. They come over and help me do the same. I pray that you will start getting excited that Christmas is on its way, where we can celebrate the birth of our Savior and Lord.
I know you may feel like you want to skip Christmas this year. I understand how you feel, but I pray that the Holy Spirit will change your heart and give you a desire to celebrate His birth. Ask the Lord to change your outlook. Maybe put up one decoration or a nativity set.
Start praying and thinking about how you can celebrate the Lord’s birthday in your own family. Find a Christmas program that you can attend. Ask a friend or a loved one to go, and share the powerful message with someone else who may not know Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord of their life.
Bob and I signed all the divorce papers in December. I felt as if I could not go through the Christmas holidays, as my heart was hurting. I felt like it was tearing apart inside my chest as the enemy was attacking my mind with all that I had done wrong the previous year.
I wondered how I would be able to get through the Christmas holidays. Bob had the other woman in his life and was planning all they would do through the holidays with both sets of children. I was still upset with myself that I had divorced Bob. I was hurting for our children and having to deal with the reality of Bob and the other woman.
But God! The Lord started speaking to my heart and got my attention. I started fasting and praying that Bob would repent, have godly sorrow, and want to come home for Christmas.
Yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 2 Corinthians 7:9-10
I know the emotions you are battling. I started praying and knew in my heart I needed to ask the Lord to remove the spirit of heaviness, depression, and oppression off of me. I asked the Lord to give me the joy of the Lord to celebrate Christmas, despite my circumstances. I realized that Christmas was more than gifts and glitter, but truly the celebration of my Lord Jesus Christ’s birthday. I needed to participate and wanted to share this extraordinary time with our children. What memories was I going to give our children this Christmas? I had to make a choice! You must also make a choice.
How about buying just one new decoration this year and making it a family outing? You could bake some cookies or banana bread to make your house smell good as you start decorating your tree. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but make it known that regardless of your present circumstances, you are going to celebrate the Lord’s birthday.
You may have to ask for some help to put up the Christmas lights or do a little bit each day. Let your home become an evangelistic tool, proclaiming the true meaning of Christmas to your family and friends.
What else can you do to get your heart and your home ready for Christmas? Put on Christmas music. Yes, you will probably cry and have memories flood your mind, but that’s okay. Enjoy this month preparing to celebrate with others the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Men, will you offer to help your children and wife decorate the outside of your home? Ask your church if a group of people, not you alone, could help decorate the homes of other singles or widows. What a blessing you would be! Do not allow the enemy to steal anything else from your family this year. May you radiate the love and joy of celebrating Christmas this year.
