Pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thessalonians 5:17-18
Prayer is a powerful way that we can love our spouse. When we realize the power of prayer, we can then recognize how Christ alone is the One who can bring about change in our lives through the habit of prayer.
Prayer changes things!
How often do you find yourself bickering with your spouse about something you never prayed about? I’m guilty of doing that. We need to make prayer for our spouses something that isn’t an afterthought, but instead, something we are intentional about.
And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 1 John 5:14
You may be wondering how to pray for your spouse specifically. Here are some great places to start:
- Their Walk with Christ – Pray that they are growing closer to Christ. Pray that they will feel refreshed by their time with the Lord. Ask the Lord to give your spouse a desire to be the husband or wife He calls us to be through His Word.
- Their Purpose – Pray that they will know God’s purpose. Pray they will walk in that purpose daily.
- Their Health – Pray that they would have the mind of Christ. Pray that the Lord would protect their body from the enemy. Pray that they would use their body and mind for things that would bring glory to Christ and turn from any wicked things that come in their path.
- Their Purity – Marriages are under attack. Pray that your spouse would remain pure in the marriage. Pray they are not tempted by pornography, other people, or other pleasures that would take them from you.
You could pray task prayers for your spouse. This is simply praying for your spouse when prompted by doing a certain task. Do you fill your wife’s car up with gas every week? That is a perfect time to pray for her safety when she is commuting. When you make the bed every day, pray for your marriage to be filled with physical and emotional intimacy.
