As we start the new year, many people will have resolutions they hope will help them be the best they can be in 2024. One of the most common resolutions will be trying to eat healthier. I once heard someone say that when you go to the grocery store hungry, filling your cart up with some of those unhealthier snacks is easy. You know the kind I am talking about – cookies, chips, ice cream, all the good stuff. Experts say you should always go grocery shopping on a full stomach. It will make it much easier for you to say no to the things that are not the best for you.
The same can be said for your spiritual life. It is important to be in the Word, so we have the tools to combat the enemy. Satan will wait until you are spiritually hungry to attack, and it will be much harder to fight his temptations when you are weak and hungry than when you are strong and filled. The enemy can look for moments in your life, like after you’ve had a bad day or you got in a fight with a family member, to strike and pull you into a sin you may have been free from for a long time.
After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:2-4
Just like we see with Jesus being tempted in the desert, Satan strikes when Jesus seems to be at his most vulnerable. He is hungry and tired, but because he was filled with spiritual food from His Father, it was easier for Him to fight off the devil’s temptations. Here, Jesus sets the example of how we should prepare for the devil’s temptations, and that is by staying filled with the things of the Lord.
How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:9-11
Just as we must protect ourselves, we must protect our marriage from the enemy’s attacks. You must keep your guard up on days when you are tired and lonely or when you get bad news because that is when you will be tempted. The best way to fight this temptation is by staying filled with God’s Word and praying consistently. It is easier to find fulfillment in what the world offers when your heart is starving. Don’t fall into the trap of being so spiritually hungry you give into temptation and sin.
As you live a life in close communion with the Lord and with a consistently full heart, you will be able to see through the lies of the enemy and see what falling into temptation will cost you. Will you commit to protecting your marriage in 2024 by being spiritually fed? No temptation Satan offers is more satisfying than a consistent relationship with Jesus Christ.
