Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
The scripture above gives us instructions on how to love well. How are you doing with loving your spouse? Do your actions line up with showing love? Are you able to show your spouse unconditional love despite how they act?
When you took your wedding vows, you committed to loving your spouse for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, until you are parted by death. God created marriage. God hates divorce. The reason divorce is so painful is that God has made you and your spouse into one flesh. Divorce is man’s attempt to separate what God designed to never separate — our one flesh relationship. As a couple working through marriage restoration, you know the pain separation and divorce causes. I had to commit every day to love my husband the way God wanted me to love him, even after restoration.
For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh. Genesis 2:24
I do not believe that there is a greater gift you can give your spouse than to stand in faith with your Lord Jesus Christ, waiting for Him to resurrect your marriage every day.
“…With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.” Mark 10:27
How can you love your spouse today? If you are a woman, let me share two scriptures to pray and ask the Lord to make you into this type of wife.
Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Ephesians 5:22-24
Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. 1 Peter 3:1-2
Men, let me share what the Bible says about husbands loving your wife. Ask the Lord to make you into the man of God that He wants you to be to love your wife as Christ loved the church.
Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself… “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.” This is a profound mystery — but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” Ephesians 5:25-28, 31-33
Today, choose to love your spouse unconditionally . You both made a vow and a marriage covenant before God to be husband and wife forever. Love never fails.
Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8
