It Is Well With My Soul

Men, has the Lord placed a devotional on your heart that you would like to share with other men that are standing? We would love to hear from you.

Once again, a hymn sung in this morning’s worship service struck a chord with me as I remembered back to the time of the breakdown of my marriage. That afternoon in February 2005, the Holy Spirit met me on the road as I was driving to a prayer meeting. He spoke to me, letting me know He was with me as I was about to travel down an uncharted road of my wife’s petition for divorce. It had been two days since I had received the divorce petition, a divorce I did not want. At that moment, in that encounter with the Holy Spirit, I realized that my Triune God was indeed REAL!

Earlier that afternoon, I had just concluded sharing with some Christian friends the events of the past few days. I ended by ‘crying my eyes out,’ trying to make sense of these events. On the road to the prayer meeting, I met my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in the embodiment of the Holy Spirit. There on that road, I finally believed and accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I was 66 years old, churched all my life, when God finally got my attention; He now showered me with His love, His compassion, and His comfort. Up until that afternoon, my ‘Christian walk’ had been a joke, a life of straddling the Christian fence.

Looking at the lyrics of this hymn, it reads in part…

When peace like a river attendeth my way
When sorrows like sea billows roll
Whatever my lot thou’ has taught me to say
It is well it is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well with my soul

My sin oh the bliss of this glorious thought
My sin not in part but the whole
Is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, o’ my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well with my soul

And Lord haste the day when my faith shall be sight
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll
The trump shall resound and the Lord shall descend
Even so it is well with my soul
It is well with my soul
It is well with my soul

Yes, the sin of not respecting my wife and taking care of my marriage (my sins) were now hanging on Calvary’s Cross, nailed there with Jesus’ own earthly body. Jesus let me know that I no longer had to bear the pain and shame of my sins for now they were His to bring before my Heavenly Father and His Father. As the refrain says…’Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, o’ my soul, It is well with my soul, It is well with my soul.’

Yes, it is well with my soul as I now walk with Jesus in the fullness of His glory, a son of the Most-High God and co-heir to the Heavenly Kingdom with Jesus Christ! And yes, I look toward the day when my Lord will return to claim believers to His Own. I will see the clouds roll back like a scroll and at the sound of trumpets, the Lord will descend from Heaven to live with believers in the New Heaven and New Earth.

Revelation 21:1-8 tells us what will happen upon Christ’s return…

Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars-they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

Yes, I sing ‘It is well with my soul!’

Standing firm on the marriage vows my wife and I exchanged before each other at our wedding, vows witnessed by God Himself, until we are separated by death.
