It Takes Time

To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven.  Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NKJV)

Joel keyed in the time on the microwave for his popcorn. While he was waiting, he texted his best friend about the homework assignment. Before the popcorn was done, his friend had replied. He took the popcorn and homework into the family room, hit the remote, and instantly his favorite after school program appeared. With one eye on the television, and one hand in the popcorn, Joel punched numbers in the calculator for his math assignment. The answers appeared almost instantly.

Mom would often give Joel and his friends grief about their “instant” lives. He could hear her right now. “When I was young, we had to…..” and then she would go on to tell them about how she had to do long division using her own brain and fix popcorn on top of the stove and actually get up to change the channel on the television. Joel and his friends always just smiled and shook their heads. They had grown up in this “instant” generation and couldn’t imagine waiting for anything.

But now Joel knew what waiting was like. He and his mom had been waiting a long time for Dad to come to his senses, return to the Lord, and come home to them. Joel knew the Lord and knew that He answered prayers. So when his mom had first asked him to pray for his dad’s salvation and return to the family, Joel just knew it was going to happen soon.

But the days had turned into months and the months had turned into seasons and Dad was still not home. Oh, there had been times when they both thought it was going to happen, but then something would pull Dad away again and Joel and his mom were left waiting. These times were hard for both of them but Mom always seemed to take it in stride. Joel, on the other hand, was tired of waiting.

No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.  Hebrews 12:11

But whenever Joel would say something to Mom, she would take him to the window or out in the backyard depending on the season. She would point to the maple tree in the backyard and ask Joel if he thought that tree grew that large overnight. Or she would take him to the rose bushes that were almost as tall as the windows and covered with hundreds of bright red flowers and have him recall the day that he and his dad had planted them. Or take him to the vegetable garden and remind him of all the months they had been waiting for the carrots and onions and green beans they were picking now.

“It takes God time to grow a tree, Joel,” Mom said. “It takes God time to make the beautiful roses and time to make the vegetables grow. And we mustn’t be in a hurry for things. We wouldn’t pick those beans before they were ready or cut the rose bushes before they had bloomed. God has the perfect time in mind to restore our family and we need to be patient and wait for it. We don’t want to pick our blessings before they are ripe.”

Joel turned off the television, set his cell phone on the end table and walked to the kitchen window. He looked at the old maple tree in the backyard, now empty of leaves. He remembered when it barely provided enough shade to play under in the summer. Now it stood stately and tall and towered above the house. In the summer it shaded the whole backyard. Joel knew Mom was right. Good things are worth waiting for.

“This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.”  Habakkuk 2:3 (NLT)

God bless
