Charlyne Cares

Are you standing for the restoration of your marriage? A daily devotional that will offer encouragement from God’s Word as you stand for the restoration of your marriage.

Jesus, Only Jesus

Today’s devotional is written by Lori Steinkamp Lassen. She is our only daughter, who has been married to her husband, Scott, for 26 years. Lori is the mother of four children, and has worked with the ministry for many years. May her devotional deepen your spiritual walk with the Lord. – Charlyne

After this, the Moabites and Ammonites with some of the Meunites came to make war on Jehoshaphat. Some men came and told Jehoshaphat, “A vast army is coming against you from Edom, from the other side of the Sea. It is already in Hazazon Tamar” (that is, En Gedi). Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah.  2 Chronicles 20:1-3

When you are facing trouble, where do you run?

A friend?
Social Media?
Your family?

When Jehoshaphat was told an army was coming toward him, he sought the Lord. Wait!? Do you mean he didn’t hop on Facebook and jump in some group discussion? He didn’t pick up a phone and text a friend? No! He “inquired of the Lord.”

On many occasions, my mom has said that she is so happy that technology was not as advanced when my dad came knocking on her office window back in July 1987. She didn’t have a cell phone that she could pick up to send out a group prayer request quickly. If she did, her message probably would have looked something like this.

I imagine her prayers that day would have been different if some of her energy had been spent calling on others instead of the Lord. Jesus is all she had that summer day. You can hear their full testimony here, but her restoration happened suddenly, if you aren’t aware. In a few hours, they went from discussing restoration to being married again.

When my parents were at lunch discussing the next step, my mom excused herself to the restroom so she could pray and gather her thoughts. Instead of phoning a friend, she focused on her Savior, who had gotten her to this point. This is what she had been praying for!

It is so easy to leave God out of our problems. Especially when huge things are happening, like an army coming against us. What army is coming against you today?

A spouse?
A divorce attorney?
A mortgage company?
Bill collectors?
Prodigal children?

It can be hard to trust God and fully depend on Him for the outcome. That is precisely what we need to do every day and in every circumstance.

Inquire of the Lord!

“Our God, will you not judge them? For we have no power to face this vast army that is attacking us. We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you”. 2 Chronicles 20:12

We have faced so many trials in our life. When each happens, I realize that I don’t have the power to handle the army, but Jesus does. I find myself constantly whispering…

Jesus, only Jesus.

He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.”  2 Chronicles 20:15

We don’t need to be afraid. We serve an almighty God who can handle all our battles.

Jesus, only Jesus.

We serve a God who died for our sins.

Jesus, only Jesus.

We serve a God who can raise the dead and heal the lame.

Jesus, only Jesus.

Whatever battle you are facing, inquire of the Lord. Let Him handle the battle for you.

Jesus, only Jesus.

As I pray that the Lord helps me focus on Him, I can’t get this song out of my head. I pray it encourages you today. ‘Jesus, Only Jesus’ by Charles Billingsley

God bless,

Thank you Lori! The song is so encouraging! Jesus You are all we need. Thank You that You came to bring good news to the poor, to comfort the brokenhearted
and to proclaim that our captive spouses will be released
and will be freed from the enemy’s prison ( Isaiah 61:1)
