Lighten the Load

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”  Matthew 11:28 (NLT)

Addy had just spent two hours at her favorite place in the world – the library. Her friends always made fun of her for being such a “bookworm” but Addy didn’t mind. While the other kids were at the mall or hanging at a friend’s house on weekend afternoons, Addy was nestled in a comfy chair at the library, reading the first chapters in several books, trying to decide which ones to take home. This afternoon it had been really hard to make a decision. She had liked each of the books she scanned. The library allowed her to take as many books as she wanted as long as they were returned on time. So Addy decided to take them all home with her.

After checking out, Addy stuffed the volumes in her backpack, fastened her helmet, and mounted her bike to ride the four blocks home. She only got a few feet when she started to wobble and before she knew it, she and her bike and her backpack were sprawled on the sidewalk. Her friend Heather just happened to be walking to the library when she saw Addy trying to steady herself on the bike with the heavy backpack. “Can I help?” she offered as Addy tried one more time to hoist the heavy backpack.

“No,” Addy answered. “I can do this.” Heather watched her friend struggle to right the bike and gain momentum. After several failed attempts, Addy finally admitted to Heather that she needed help. Heather took several of the books from the backpack and she and Addy, walking her bike, headed home.

Do you sometimes feel like Addy? Struggling under a heavy load? Does it sometimes seem like your “backpack” is full of worries and doubts and things that have gone wrong in your life? Do you wish you had a friend to help you carry the load?

You do, you know. Jesus wants you to know that when the load gets too heavy or the way gets too rough, He is there for you. He told us to cast our cares on Him; He will help us to keep walking

Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.  Psalm 55:22 (NLT)

Take a look in your backpack right now. Is it kind of full? Is it time to lighten the load a little bit? What kind of burdens are you carrying in there? Are you worried about losing your friends or where you are going to live? Are you worried about changes in your life and what it’s going to be like now?

“That is why I tell you not to worry about everyday life—whether you have enough food and drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn’t life more than food, and your body more than clothing? Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?”  Matthew 6:25-26 (NLT)

Maybe a big burden in your backpack right now is your mom or your dad. Maybe they’re a little lost right now and not sure of the right path. Jesus knows that you worry about them. He does too. But He has promised to hear and answer our prayers for them. He has promised to go after the lost and bring them home.

The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.  James 5:16b (NLT)

Your backpack may be a little heavy right now and you may be wobbling. But Jesus wants you to know that you are not alone and He is there to help you. He loves you and He loves your family. He’ll be there with You to lighten the load. Let Him.

Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.  1 Peter 5:7 (NLT)

God bless
