Loving Your Enemies Even When You Hurt

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse… Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. On the contrary: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head. “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:14, 17-21

It’s the day after a holiday. It usually goes one of two ways. Either you are rejoicing at how well the day went, or you had unmet expectations and are feeling low today. How was your Thanksgiving? Are you hurting? Were you alone this Thanksgiving because your spouse had your children? If you were disappointed, are you able to forgive your spouse one more time?

Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times. Matthew 18:21-22

If I were with you right now listening to your story of disappointment, I would be hurting for all that you have faced. The Lord wants us to learn how to be like Him. Just as He forgives us, we can forgive others. Let’s never forget what our Lord Jesus said on the cross after His horrendous flogging and all the insults He went through that day.

Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” Luke 23:34

Have you learned to take captive the negative thoughts that may flood your mind? Don’t let the enemy destroy your faith, your hope, and God’s promises. The enemy wants to derail God’s plan and purpose for your life and marriage. Guess what? We know who wins this battle!

Do you know how much the Lord loves you? He desires good things for you. Never forget that Satan cannot touch a hair on your head without God’s permission. God can use these complicated situations for His glory. Not all things are good, but God can use all things. You can be victorious.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose… What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all — how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Romans 8:28, 31-32

Loving people who hurt you is a choice, but through God’s power, it is possible. Do you struggle with loving someone who has hurt you? That may be your spouse, your in-laws, friends who have abandoned you since your marriage problems began. You can love your enemies.

You may feel abandoned, but your Heavenly Father will never leave you or forsake you. You need to learn how to love regardless of other people’s actions.

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8

May I challenge you this weekend to examine your heart? Are you able to love unconditionally? Your answer will reflect your spiritual growth and maturity in the Lord.

Let me share a special prayer for you to pray:

Lord, heal my hurts and the pain in my heart. It feels like it is breaking in two. Lord, remove all sorrow and heal my broken, crushed spirit. Help me to forgive and love my spouse unconditionally. Holy Spirit, empower me to love those who hurt me. Reveal God’s truths and open my spouse’s blinded eyes and my loved ones who are deceived as I pray for their salvation daily. Thank You, Lord, that Your mercy and grace is sufficient for me today. Make this Christmas season special to me regardless of my circumstances. Lord, resurrect hurting and dead marriages around the world throughout the Christmas holiday season. I pray this all in the mighty Name of Jesus. Amen.

God bless,

Charlyne
