“Those who are wayward in spirit will gain understanding; those who complain will accept instruction.”Isaiah 29:24
Have you ever felt like someone gave up on you? You may feel that way right now. That may also be how your spouse feels. Never give up on your wayward, deceived spouse. They may not realize they need you to fight for them in prayer, but trust me, they need it.
As we look towards a new year, I want to challenge you to ask the Lord to strengthen your faith as you wait on His timing.
One important prayer is that your spouse and other prodigals will not harden their hearts. There are consequences to their disobedience and sin.
See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first. As has just been said: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.”Hebrews 3:12-15
Be alert that you do not allow your own heart to become hardened by thinking that your circumstances are impossible. I receive emails daily from people who say their spouse’s heart is so hard that it seems impossible for them ever to change. You have just believed a lie from the enemy. Nothing is impossible with God. Never doubt the power of Jesus.
I am especially grieved for some Christian families who had once turned their lives over to serve the Lord Jesus Christ. Then the enemy came in subtly and swiftly to steal, kill and destroy their marriage, family, and reputation. How many other couples’ faith was damaged or weakened by close friends or leaders in their church getting a divorce? Jesus Christ has the answer for any problem that you are facing. Do you believe it? Then we must proclaim it to others.
If your spouse hardens their heart, they will no longer be sensitive to His Word or the Holy Spirit’s wooing. Your spouse may be seeking and finding pleasures in the ways of the world. That is why your prayers are necessary.
Have you heard about “personal apostasy?” Bob and I had talked about “personal apostasy” or “turning away” many times before he went to be with the Lord. This Greek term is defined as a falling away, defection, rebellion, abandonment, withdrawal or turning from what one has formerly turned to” (The Full Life Study Bible). That described my husband when he was serving the Lord. He was tempted, and he chose to give up his faith and values and lived a lifestyle that looked contrary to a believer. Does that describe your spouse today? You can fast and pray for the Holy Spirit to speak loudly to their hardened heart, as they are denying their Lord God in so many different ways.
When Bob returned home, he showed me notes in his Bible that he had in the far country. I saw many notes from sermons when he was away from home. Bob’s sermon notes said the solution to apostasy is: Love faith, Learn faith, Live faith, and Loose Faith in your life . I praise the Lord that now, many years later, I can read the notes of a sermon that was 100% accurate to God’s Holy Word. Because the Lord loved Bob so much, He kept speaking to him to turn from his sinful ways. Please pray, and believe God’s Word as it will not return void. Here is one scripture that you can pray daily for your spouse:
‘To open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'”Acts 26:18
Your Lord loves your spouse so very much. Our Heavenly Father is going to speak to your beloved spouse over and over again. God does speak. Don’t give up! Be obedient, be consistent in praying, walk in faith, trust the Lord and wait for God’s perfect timing for the Lord to bring your husband or wife to the Lord and then to marriage restoration. Are you ready? Don’t give up, and keep praying as you continue to rejoice in the Lord daily!
But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. Be merciful to those who doubt; snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy, mixed with fear- hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh. To him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy-to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.Jude 1:20-25
