Oh No, You Never Let Go of Me

Men, has the Lord placed a devotional on your heart that you would like to share with other men that are standing? We would love to hear from you.

Most who are reading this devotional have come face to face with one of life’s most upsetting emotional and relational situations… marital discord (the breakdown of family bonds) and/or divorce. As we run around, distraught, wringing our hands, tears flowing down our face, the one person who can help us is our Triune God. We pray, we cry out for relief from the pain of this breakdown of our family relations. Yes, we look to our Triune God!

Yes, our Triune God stands by us in all of our trials, so trust Him. In a recent Sunday worship service, we sang this song: You Never Let Go. A beautiful story of one struggling with some of life’s most troubling sorrows. Read these lyrics. See how they fit your own situation.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
Your perfect love is casting out fear
And even when I’m caught in the middle of the storms of this life
I won’t turn back
I know You are near

And I will fear no evil
For my God is with me
And if my God is with me
Whom then shall I fear?
Whom then shall I fear?

Oh no, You never let go
Through the calm and through the storm
Oh no, You never let go
In every high and every low
Oh no, You never let go
Lord, You never let go of me

And I can see a light that is coming for the heart that holds on
A glorious light beyond all compare
And there will be an end to these troubles
But until that day comes
We’ll live to know You here on the earth

And I will fear no evil
For my God is with me
And if my God is with me
Whom then shall I fear?
Whom then shall I fear?
Oh no, You never let go
Through the calm and through the storm
Oh no, You never let go
In every high and every low
Oh no, You never let go
Lord, You never let go of me

Yes, I can see a light that is coming for the heart that holds on
And there will be an end to these troubles
But until that day comes
Still I will praise You, still I will praise You

Oh no, You never let go
Through the calm and through the storm
Oh no, You never let go
In every high and every low
Oh no, You never let go
Lord, You never let go of me

This hymn starts with a quote from the 23rd Psalm, ‘the valley of the shadow of death.’ I know for myself as I walked this path of marital upheaval, I felt that I was in a valley, a valley of the death of my marriage. I feared many things but as I looked around, I remembered that I have a God Who loves me and cares about me. And as the storm clouds moved in, I felt the comfort and presence of my Heavenly Father. For my God was with me, shielding me from the evil of Satan as he attempts to destroy my marriage. God reminds us that He is with us, through the good times and the bad times. He tells us to fear not, for we are in His mighty hands and that He is holding on tight and He will never let go!

The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Psalm 23:1-6

God lets us know that if we hold on and let our heart hold on to the light of truth and the freedom from fear, that there will be an end to our troubles. However, until that day comes, we will praise Almighty God. And while not every marriage will be healed, trusting in our Father God will heal our wounded heart and we will find peace. For that, we will praise Him always.

Several more of my favorite passages about hope in the Bible are found in the Book of Hebrews. Chapter 11 speaks of faith, something we all must have as we stand with God for the healing of our marriages.

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see… And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:1,6

Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” …Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today and forever. Hebrews 13:5-6, 8

Standing firm on God’s promises and the vows my wife and I exchanged when were married, vows witnessed by God, until we are parted by death.
