Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him….When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it and began to give it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us? Luke 24:13-16, 30-32
The scripture above took place after the sad events of Friday and Saturday and the miraculous resurrection of Sunday. These disciples were so caught up in the events that had occurred that they had forgotten Jesus’ promise to them. It wasn’t until He broke bread with them that their eyes were opened.
Sometimes we are very much like these disciples. So caught up in the circumstances, seeing only the bad, not even looking for the good. That may be where you are at right now in this journey of praying for your family. The journey has been long, the circumstances continue to get worse, the prayers seem to be met with silence.
I implore you – open your eyes. Open your eyes to see that Jesus is still working. Open your eyes to the promises in His Word. Open your eyes to all the blessings He bestows, even in the midst of heartache. Open your eyes to His love, His peace, and His comfort.
I know that these journeys can sometimes be difficult – giving hope and then taking it away, walking strongly one day and stumbling the next. But through it all, Jesus is with You. He’s there in the good times, the bad times, and every time in between. We just need to open our eyes to His guidance and His blessings.
Jesus wants to carry you through this. Trust Him – even when you don’t understand. Trust Him even when there is nothing in the flesh to hang on to. Open your eyes to see that He is ALWAYS with you – protecting, guiding, even blessing. Trust that He is working all things for your good.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28
