We live in trying times… natural disasters, terrorist attacks, political and social unrest. These are just a few of the dramatic events we here in the USA have experienced. On a more personal front, most of us have experienced the breakdown of our marriages and our families. In the midst of all these and similar events, one thing can always be depended on… the consistent presence of our loving God. He is here to comfort, to direct, to lead us back to better times.
In the past few weeks, I have been sitting out on my patio late at night, talking to God. My patio faces north, and as I pray, I look up into the night sky and see the ever-consistent North Star, always located in the same place. From ancient times, the North Star has been a celestial body, so consistent in its position, that it was used to navigate man’s journeys both on land and on the seas. As I look at this star, a star created by our God at the creation of the world, I am reminded again and again of its consistent position in the night sky. And like this star, our God is consistent, always trustworthy, forever present in our lives even when we don’t realize His presence. Our God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. He is consistent and trustworthy.
As we look at our marriages and families, let us look to God’s Word for His reassurance:
Marriage should be honored by everyone. And every marriage should be kept pure between husband and wife. God will judge guilty those who commit sexual sins and adultery. Keep your lives free from the love of money. And be satisfied with what you have. God has said, “I will never leave you; I will never run away from you.” So we can feel sure and say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. People can do nothing to me.” Hebrews 13:4-6 (ERV)
What a wonderful word of reassurance from our God. He is trustworthy, consistent as He has been down through the ages. He is Almighty God! And that consistency has not changed since before the beginning of time, it exists the same today, and it will be found in God’s nature in the future.
“Come to me all of you who are tired from the heavy burden you have been forced to carry. I will give you rest. Accept my teaching. Learn from me. I am gentle and humble in spirit. And you will be able to get some rest. Yes, the teaching that I ask you to accept is easy. The load I give you to carry is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (ERV)
“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” Matthew 11:28-30 (MSG)
It is in situations like you and I are going through that our God is there for us. For many, God at times may seem distant or even nowhere to be found. It is in these times that many of us find comfort and direction from our Consistent God. Look around and He will find you. This is a time to get close to God, to study His Word, to pray (talk to God) and look for the various ways He interacts with each of us. Take time to worship our God and sing praises to Him. In like manner, look beyond your own personal needs, hurts, worries and reach out to others in similar situations. Share with them the help that God has shown you in your own life in similar situations. God is pleased, actually overjoyed, when we look beyond ourselves to help others.
In New Testament times, Jesus was always under attack from the Teachers of the Law. He was often asked questions that they thought would stump Him.
Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:34-40
In the scriptures quoted above, one thing is consistent: it is our Consistent God. His love, comfort, and leadership flow out of His nature as He interacts with you and me. Like the North Star which is consistent in its position, our God is consistent in His love, comfort, and direction. He tells each of us… “Trust me! I was here yesterday for you, I am here today for you, and I will be here with you tomorrow and forever!” Our God is consistent in all things. Trust Him!
As each of you face the turmoil in your marriage and family life, come close to God and He will come close to you. He will walk with you through the muck and mire of your situations, bringing you to a better place and a better and stronger relationship with Him. He is consistent! He is our Consistent God.
