Read the Manual

“Submit to God, and you will have peace; then things will go well for you. Listen to his instructions, and store them in your heart.”  Job 22:21-22 (NLT)

I recently purchased a “new-to-me” car. My other car was old and very basic so all the new technology on this one is confusing. I thought I knew what I needed to know to be able to drive it around until I got a chance to go through the manual. One day I was driving and it started to rain. I reached for where I THOUGHT the wipers should be. Not there! I fumbled around for awhile then finally had to pull over to get out the “Quick Start Guide” they had fortunately placed in the glove box. Was I ready to drive that car? Obviously not. And why? Because I hadn’t read the manual.

We have a “manual” for our life, too. It’s called the Bible. This book has everything you’ll need to live a good Christian life. It has stories and parables and prayers and instruction. And they’re all given freely. They are yours to cherish and live by. You can read of promises made over 2000 years ago and know that these promises are for you and your family also. You can read of the miracles and wonders that a loving God performed for the Israelites and know that He wants to work those same miracles in your family’s life. You can read stories about His love and forgiveness and know that this grace is available for you and for your mom or dad.

God’s “manual” will help you to know how to pray. It will help you be prepared when the enemy comes roaring into your life. It will help you walk a path that is sometimes rocky without stumbling along the way. It will help you keep your eyes focused on Jesus and your heart set on the prize.

“This command I am giving you today is not too difficult for you, and it is not beyond your reach. It is not kept in heaven, so distant that you must ask, ‘Who will go up to heaven and bring it down so we can hear it and obey?’ It is not kept beyond the sea, so far away that you must ask, ‘Who will cross the sea to bring it to us so we can hear it and obey?’ No, the message is very close at hand; it is on your lips and in your heart so that you can obey it.”  Deuteronomy 30:11-14 (NLT)

The Bible was written centuries ago yet everything we need to live by today can be found in its pages. Spending time in the Word helps us to learn more about God. The promises woven through the verses, the miracles recounted in the stories, the prophecies foretold and the judgments pronounced – all these things serve to guide us as we pray for our dad or our mom. This is why the Word is so important. It is the foundation of our faith

Our “manual” helps us to be ready when things don’t go as we had hoped or even as we thought they would. It is so much easier to speak the Word of God over a situation than to fret and worry about it. Reading our Bibles helps us to be prepared for any situations the enemy wants to throw at us.

The promises in God’s Word are for us and for those we love and pray for. They are offered freely to all. Open your Bible and see what His Word has to say to you today. Then speak these words to the mountains in your life. His Word will not return empty.

“As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”  Isaiah 55:10-11

God bless
