Right on Time

“This vision is for a future time. It describes the end, and it will be fulfilled. If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place. It will not be delayed.”  Habakkuk 2:3 (NLT)

“Josh, get up now! We’re going to be late!” Mom’s voice rang up the stairs into Josh’s room where it competed with the incessant alarm that had been blaring for some time now. With a deep sigh and an even louder groan, Josh threw the covers off and set his feet on the floor. He glanced at the clock beside the bed. Jeez! Mom was right, he WAS going to be late.

Josh dug through the pile of clothes in the corner of his room to find the least wrinkled pair of pants and t-shirt he could find. “Should have put those in the laundry basket,” he thought to himself. “Might have had something clean to wear today.” He was able to find a pair of clean socks and he pulled those over his feet and stuffed them into his tennis shoes, not bothering with the laces.

Downstairs, his little brother and mom were waiting by the garage door. Mom handed him a piece of toast as the garage door went up and he buckled in for the ride to school. Josh was pretty hungry this morning but because he had procrastinated so long, he guessed he would have to settle for the soggy toast.

Once at school, he stashed his backpack in his locker, grabbed the book he needed for his first class, and slid into his seat, just as the bell rang. Right on time. Not one minute too early or one minute too late. But what a journey it had been to get there!

Right on time. Mom was always talking about how the Lord would be “right on time” when He answered their prayers for Dad. Josh was thinking that anytime Dad came home would be “right on time.” But Mom had talked to him and his little brother about how the Lord had the perfect time to bring Dad home. He would not be a minute too early or a minute too late. The Lord knew when everything and everybody would be ready. He didn’t want to give Josh’s family something good – He wanted to give them something great. God was in control of the circumstances and He knew just what had to happen, how it had to happen, and when it had to happen to bring about His miracle. The wait time was part of God’s plan so that he could bring His best blessings.

The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does. The Lord upholds all who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down. The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time. You open your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.  Psalm 145:13b-16

Dad had come home once. Josh thought it was right on time then. He had left again after a few months. But as Mom had explained, sometimes people aren’t quite ready and the Lord has some more work to do in their hearts. This was one of those times. God didn’t want them to settle for second best. No, His plans for their family were far greater than that. So Josh and his little brother and his mom were still praying and waiting for their “right on time” moment. The journey wasn’t easy, but it was so worth it.

As the teacher began class, Josh thought about the rush that morning and how, even though he had to wear wrinkled clothes and eat soggy toast, he still made it to school right on time. And maybe that was the way it was for their family. They might have to live through some circumstances they didn’t really like, but Josh knew in his heart that the Lord would bring Dad back to Him and back to their family – right on time.

This is what the Lord says: “In the time of my favor I will answer you, and in the day of salvation I will help you; I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land and to reassign its desolate inheritances, to say to the captives, ‘Come out,’ and to those in darkness, ‘Be free!’”  Isaiah 49:8-9a

God bless
