Seasons Change

For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest. A time to kill and a time to heal. A time to tear down and a time to build up. A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance. A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones. A time to embrace and a time to turn away. A time to search and a time to quit searching. A time to keep and a time to throw away. A time to tear and a time to mend. A time to be quiet and a time to speak. A time to love and a time to hate. A time for war and a time for peace.  Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 (NLT)

Fall has definitely arrived in my part of the country. Mornings are chilly and furnaces are occasionally running after several months of non-use. Farmers have started harvesting the dryland corn and some bean fields are being cut. Trees are starting to lose their leaves. My backyard is ankle deep already and I dread all the raking and bagging that goes along with fall.

But along with all the work, comes all the beauty. The leaves are changing color before they come down and my journeys around town or out to the farm are filled with some fantastic scenery. I used to think there was nothing good about fall, but have come to realize that there is good and bad in every season. If those leaves didn’t come down this fall, there wouldn’t be new growth in the spring. God created every season for a purpose.

You made the moon to mark the seasons. And the sun always knows when to set.… Lord, you have made many things. With your wisdom you made them all. The earth is full of your riches.  Psalm 104:19, 24 (ICB)

This is true in our lives, too. Just as nature goes through seasonal changes, so do we. And each season has a purpose in your life. It may be to give you rest. It may be to stretch you as a Christian. It may be to help you to trust and rely more fully on God. Whatever the season in your life, God has a purpose for it. And there is good in it.

You might be in a great season in your life right now. Your family is whole, your friends are loyal, school is going great and Mom has carrot cake for dessert tonight. This is your season of blessing and God wants you to be thankful for it.

But you also may be in a season that is not so good. Your friends are at a different school this year or your teacher is tougher than last year. Maybe there is fighting in your home or maybe someone is missing from the dinner table. This may be your season of trial but God wants you to be thankful for this season, too. This is your chance to draw nearer to God, to let Him be in control, to really feel how much He cares for you.

Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NLT)

Just as fall won’t stick around forever, giving way to winter snow, the seasons do change. And they change in your life too. Good times and bad times will come and go. Circumstances today could be entirely different tomorrow. People you don’t know today may become your friends next week. School work that is tough can become easier as you begin to understand it. Prayers that you thought were not being heard are answered. That empty place at the dinner table is filled once again.

Each season brings change. To our yards, to our friends, to our family, to us. And God has promised to be with us through every season in our life, good or bad, long or short, happy or sad. God never changes. In scripture it says that He has made everything beautiful in its time. God can make something beautiful out of even the worst seasons of our lives.

Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Ephesians 3:20 (NLT)

God bless
