Seeing God in the Little Things

“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand.”  Zechariah 4:10 (NLT)

Waiting is not an easy thing to do. Ask any young child who is eagerly anticipating the upcoming Christmas holiday. I’m sure many of them are anticipating that Christmas morning with brightly colored gifts around the tree, ready to be opened, cherished, and enjoyed. That’s the ‘big thing’ they are waiting for.

But in all their anticipation, perhaps they are overlooking all the ‘little things’ that add up to that big day. The beautiful Christmas decorations at their church, a visit from relatives not often seen, baking Christmas cookies and constructing gingerbread houses, decorating the tree with their family, drinking hot cocoa after a night of caroling, wrapping presents and tying bows. So many special, enjoyable little things that lead up to the big thing.

It may be that you are praying and hoping for a ‘big thing” in the life of your family – for an absent dad or mom to find their way back to Jesus and back to their family. And that really would be a big thing. But right now, right where you are, there are little signs of God at work. Don’t forget to see His work in all the little things along this journey.

It may be that you have grown closer to the Lord during this journey. If you are faithfully praying and trusting God for the restoration of your family, you have been spending more and more time walking more closely with Him, leaning on Him, asking Him for guidance and direction. You have come to know and rely on His faithfulness as you put one foot in front of the other, trusting Him each step of the way. This, too, is a big thing.

Have you seen others in your family growing closer to God? Maybe you have seen your mom or dad change their attitudes of anger and bitterness into love and forgiveness. Maybe you have seen a brother or sister who seemed so far away from God start walking a little more closely along His path. Maybe your own attitudes and perspective have also changed. Do you find yourself a little more tolerant, a little more forgiving, a little more loving to friends and family? This, too, is a big thing.

Maybe you’ve seen some changes in the one you pray for. They may be calling more often, helping out a little more, being more interested in the things of the family. Maybe they’re coming around more frequently ‘just because.’ Maybe their words have become less hostile and a lot more kind. Perhaps their ‘never’ has changed to a ‘maybe.’ This, too, is a big thing.

Yes, we all hope and pray for that ‘big thing.’ But let’s not overlook all the little things God does along the way. As we faithfully walk this path He has laid out before us, let’s enjoy the journey. Rejoice in what God is doing in your life and others’ lives along the way. Look for the lessons God is trying to teach you. Open your eyes to see the wonderful things God is already doing around you. Praise Him for all the little things He is doing in your life as you anticipate the good thing He has promised for your family.

But Elijah climbed to the top of Mount Carmel and bowed low to the ground and prayed with his face between his knees. Then he said to his servant, “Go and look out toward the sea.” The servant went and looked, then returned to Elijah and said, “I didn’t see anything.” Seven times Elijah told him to go and look. Finally the seventh time, his servant told him, “I saw a little cloud about the size of a man’s hand rising from the sea.”  1 Kings 18:42-44 (NLT)

God bless
