“He must become greater; I must become less.” John 3:30
Have you ever tried to start a fire using a magnifying glass? When we were kids, my brothers and I would grab a dry leaf and a magnifying glass and try to start a fire. I watched videos on the best way to get a fire going this way, and many suggested aligning the magnifying glass so the circle of light was tiny and concentrated.
That should be our goal. We should want Christ so magnified in our lives that it starts a fire within us.
Fire has benefits. It can stimulate growth, refine, give heat and give light. Our prayer should be that Christ does all of that in us. Just as fire consumes land quickly, I want Jesus to consume my life.
I want to be so concentrated on Jesus that He can refine me like that tiny ray of light. When we were growing up, we would visit a fair in Georgia many summers. We loved watching the demonstrations. One of my favorites was the demonstration from a blacksmith. I remember watching in awe as he took a piece of wrought iron and put it in the fire. Soon, this rugged piece of steel was malleable and able to be shaped into almost any design.
That is what Jesus can do in our lives. He can shape us into His image. I want Him to take the hard parts of my life and, through His redeeming fire, allow Him to shape me into the person He wants me to be.
Do you know what fire does quickly? It spreads. I remember the church talent show when I was in fourth grade. My best friend, April, and I sang the song Pass It On. I don’t recall us winning any awards that day (there wasn’t a best nasal singing category), but I have never forgotten the first part of that song- “It only takes a spark to get a fire glowing.” That’s it! It only takes a spark.
The spark of fire in your life can be what draws others to Christ. Have you seen a person who glows because of Jesus? They are not living a life without stress or problems, but they live a life dependent on Jesus Christ! Do other people see the spark of Jesus in you? Or are you the one snuffing out the fire in their life with your bad attitude?
Trials are going to come. Illness and death will impact your family. We live in a fallen world. You have already seen your family torn apart and rebuilt with your marriage problems. When Jesus is the fire in our soul, we entirely depend on Him! Doesn’t that sound like the place to be? Resting in Christ?
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Matthew 5:6
If you feel like the fire in your spirit has been extinguished, I pray that you will seek the Lord. Ask Him to stir up an unsettledness in your heart that can’t be quenched without the fire He will place in your soul.
Shine bright for Christ! He is worthy of our praise!
Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, for our “God is a consuming fire.” Hebrews 12:29
