Men, has the Lord placed a devotional on your heart that you would like to share with other standers?

We have all been there. Not just in our marriage relationships, but rather in all of our relationships. Listen closely and you will hear His feet as He comes running toward you with His arms outstretched. How often in times past have each of us suffered only to look up to see and feel our Heavenly Father’s arms about us and His love poured out into our lives?

We all know the story, the story of the Prodigal Son as told in Luke 15. We see the father (a metaphor for Our Heavenly Father) running to greet his wayward son, coming home from his misguided wanderings and poor choices, coming home… broken, just coming home.

“So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.”  Luke 15:20 (NLT)

I remember in my own marriage as it began to go south, I was confused, hurt, seeking direction. I had made many mistakes in my life, many of them in my marriage. I saw a towering mountain of circumstances I needed to overcome if my marriage was to survive. Counselors did not help to any great degree, yet God appointed my small church community group to redirect my thinking. My wife’s divorce petition had just been served and it was more than I could handle. I broke down, sobbing over the poor choices I had made in our marriage, sobbing over what I saw and felt was a dead-end path that our marriage had taken.

Shortly after my community group prayed over me, I became aware of the presence of the Holy Spirit, of Jesus and my Heavenly Father wrapping Their loving arms about me, comforting me, whispering to my wounded heart… ‘Lean on Me. I am here today, I will be here tomorrow, I will be with you forever. We (God and I) will walk this path together with the ultimate goal of healing of my wounds and my marriage.’ Later, as I drove to a prayer meeting at my church, I knew my life had been changed forever. The hurts, the abandonment, the rejection by my wife were still there; they had yet to be resolved, but I was at peace. It was truly a ‘peace that passes all understanding.’ That peace is still with me to this very day, some 12 years later. I would not trade it for anything!

If one has not had a similar conversation with God, I predict you will; it will come if you stay rooted in your Christian faith. The events mentioned above were my spiritual re-birth. I thank God that He took me down this path, a painful path, yet a much-needed path in my life. For along that path, I found my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Much like Paul’s encounter with Christ on the Damascus Road, this was my Damascus Road experience.

Yes, Jesus Christ came running. It was in those moments some 12 years ago that I experienced for the first time, God’s grace in my life. The world had pulled me this way and that. The world had distorted my vision of what God had created and wanted in the covenant of marriage.

Consider these several scriptures as you consider God’s love and compassion for His children:

Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you shall go with this people into the land which the LORD has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall give it to them as an inheritance. The LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”  Deuteronomy 31:7-8 (NASB)

We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters. If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion—how can God’s love be in that person?  1 John 3:16-17 (NLT)

Stay tuned. God, though the Holy Spirit, is calling you. His love and compassion for you and me is found in the Bible… from Genesis through Revelation. As you study the Bible, listen closely for the sound of His running feet, running toward you, NOT away. Our Heavenly Father loves you with a love that is never ceasing! He will never turn His back on you, no matter how much sin you have in your life and marriage. Listen for the running feet, they are God’s feet! They are coming toward you to welcome you home! Praise the Lord!

Standing firm on the covenant marriage vows that my wife and I exchanged in times past, vows witnessed by God Himself, until we are parted by death.
