Are you standing for the restoration of your marriage? A daily devotional that will offer encouragement from God’s Word as you stand for the restoration of your marriage.

Stop and Go

Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.  Hebrews 10:36 (NLT)

This has been one of those springs for farmers around here. Days of bright sunshine and soft breezes followed by days of heavy rain and strong winds. This cycle has repeated itself off and on for the last several weeks. A few days in a dry field, then a few days sitting it out to let the fields dry out. The unpredictability of the weather has led to a lot of stop and go for the farmers trying to plant.

You may be experiencing this unpredictability in your journey for a restored family. There may be a lot of stop and go along the path. Things are going in the right direction. There is more contact, more interaction, more kind words being said. Then suddenly it comes to a complete stop. Interaction and contact ceases and kind words are no longer being said. It can be disheartening and confusing. It may even lead to thoughts of giving up.

These “stop” times along your journey don’t mean you stop walking. This is where that word perseverance comes into play. These are the times you need to turn up the heat in your prayer closet. These are the times you need to cling even more tightly to the hand of Jesus as he leads and guides you. These are the times you need to know that God is still working.

Yes, for the farmers, it was a time when no discing or planting or spraying was happening. But that didn’t mean that other things needed around the farm weren’t happening. They use this stop time to work on machinery that has needed attention or make trips for grain or anhydrous. They also use this time to reconnect with their families. To attend that softball game or take the kids into town for ice cream. Even though they are not working in the fields, they are still working.

Teach me to do your will, for you are my God. May your gracious Spirit lead me forward on a firm footing.  Psalm 143:10 (NLT)

I like to look at stop times during our journey as intermissions in a play. Things are still happening behind the scenes; things that need to be done so the entertainment can continue. God may be using this stop time in your journey to work behind the scenes. He is working on the one you pray for where you can’t see what is happening. He’s opening hearts and minds, sending His Holy Spirit to speak to them, nudging them gently back on the path. When His work is complete, the “go” time begins.

As much as the go times bring us hope and gratitude, we also need to be thankful for what is happening during the stop times. This is where Jesus does His best work in the hearts of our mom or dad. This is when they may be more open to His instruction and His guidance. This is when He is repairing things and getting them ready. And this is when He needs your forgiveness, your unconditional love, your continuing prayers to set your dad or mom on a better path. A path to their salvation, a path to faith, a path to a family restored and living for Him.

For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.  2 Peter 1:5-7 (NLT)

God bless
