Restored and Redeemed

Has your marriage been restored? Restored & Redeemed is a devotional for those in a restored marriage.

Ten Things to Remember When You Are Tempted to Give Up on Your Marriage

You are part of a special group of people. Those who have endured marriage problems, possibly even separation or divorce, yet your marriage has been restored.

It doesn’t take long to realize that a restored marriage doesn’t mean you are exempt from ever having problems again. Your marriage is made up of two sinners, so there will occasionally be problems, but the secret is learning how to continue fighting and praying for your marriage. My mom always said, “Once a stander, always a stander.” She would never stop praying for her marriage again once it was restored.

Learning how to handle the bumps that may come your way will be the secret to working together as a couple towards a healthy marriage. When the trials come, how will you each react?

Have you ever noticed the small red boxes on the walls of public buildings? They instruct a person to “Break Glass in Case of Emergency.” My dad, a returned prodigal himself, had his own alarm box ideas with some things to do when you are tempted to give up after marriage restoration.

  1. Turn on worship music and begin to praise through the problems.
  1. Grab your Bible. Read the special scriptures the Lord showed you in days past.
  1. Even if you hurt too much to pray, the Bible promises God hears our wordless groans. (Romans 8:26-27)
  1. Call one prayer partner who understands and will pray with you. (Avoiding gossiping or calling multiple people).
  1. Do you need to forgive your spouse? If so, forgive them. (Mark 11:25)
  1. Write God a prayer letter when you feel tempted to share your personal struggles with others. They can’t do much to help you, but God can.
  1. Be still and listen for God. (Psalm 46:10)
  1. Get moving. Things that seem overwhelming can feel much more manageable after a brisk walk. (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
  1. Pull out your old journals and remember what God has brought you through. If you didn’t journal during your stand for marriage restoration, today is a great day to start. (Deuteronomy 6:6-9)
  1. Remember that God has brought you through the fire. The enemy will want you to feel like your marriage is hopeless. Replace the lies of the enemy with the truth of God.

The Lord has done an amazing work in your marriage! Don’t let the enemy try and steal the thing that the Lord has redeemed.

God bless,
