The Firefly Parade

The Lord went ahead of them. He guided them during the day with a pillar of cloud, and he provided light at night with a pillar of fire. This allowed them to travel by day or by night.  Genesis 13:21 (NLT)

I recently returned my grandchildren to the farm during dusk. Usually, we are traveling in the light of day but activities prevented us from leaving until near dark. As we neared the turnoff for the 5-mile drive on the rural road, we all noticed the large number of fireflies that lined the road. We would sometimes see a few as we traveled, but never so many at one time. All along that road, on either side, those fireflies were flitting and flying and lighting up.

One said it looked like a firefly parade. Another commented that it looked like they were saluting us as we drove. Another said they were lighting the way and leading us home.

All of these comments spoke to me. It did look like they were lining the road, marching along, saluting us as we went past. But the comment that spoke to me most was that they were lighting the way and leading us home.

As I drove home that night, thoroughly enjoying the multitude of fireflies, I thought about the families who are praying for their dad or their mom to come home to Jesus and home to them. I thought about these fireflies as all the prayers being sent up on their behalf, for Jesus to light the way and lead them home.

Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.  Psalm 119:105 (NLT)

Sometimes circumstances or the passage of time or our lack of faith or trust, causes our little light to go out. Maybe the situation has gotten worse instead of better. Maybe it continues on day after day with no change and we wonder why. Maybe we just get weary of praying for something that looks like it might not happen. Before long, the light of our prayers winks out little by little, until all that the one we pray for sees is a flash here or a light there.

But God has a way of taking what little we offer and multiplying it, enhancing it, enlarging it, until our mom or dad cannot help but notice it. We would not have seen that firefly parade if there had not been so many of them. Some circumstance conspired to make this the night that the fireflies gathered together, welcomed us and led us home.

Each time you send up prayers for your dad or your mom, it helps to light the way for them. Those prayers you send up to God on their behalf, are enlarged and multiplied in His hands. They are joined together with the prayers of others who are praying for your lost loved one to turn their heart to Jesus and let His love lead and guide them home.

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”  John 8:12 (NLT)

Never give up praying for your mom or your dad. Your prayers, combined with others, become a beacon of light to them when given to God to multiply. May this be the night that all the circumstances conspire to bring unmistakable light to the one you pray for and may they clearly see their way home, to Jesus and to the family that prays for them.

“I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them.”  Isaiah 42:16

God bless
