The Gift of God’s Promises and God’s Timing

Each week we share guest devotionals. The views expressed below are those of the writer and may not reflect the views of Rejoice Marriage Ministries or the Steinkamps.

Has the Lord placed a devotional on your heart that you would like to share with other standers?

Acts 1: 4-8 (NLT) …when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” So when the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our Kingdom?” He replied, “The father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere…to the ends of the earth.”

What we read here in Acts is that Jesus has died, been resurrected from the grave (Alleluia!) and has appeared to the apostles. Jesus is sharing a meal with the apostles and instructing them not to leave Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit (described as a gift from God) descends. Jesus describes the Holy Spirit’s gift as a baptism and uses the analogy of John the Baptist baptizing with water. The Apostles, lost in the timing of and heavily focused on Jesus’ return, keep asking Jesus over and over when He would free Israel and restore God’s kingdom. Jesus responds to them by saying that only God, the Heavenly Father, can set those dates and times and it is not something they’d ever know. Until then, God has promised the power of Jesus through the gift of the Holy Spirit. Once that is received, the apostles are instructed to go “throughout the ends of the earth” talking about Jesus and His works.

The apostles had lots of questions about when God would return and bring healing, restoration and worldly order. Here is Jesus telling them, “I’m leaving you with My power” and yet the apostles are focused on what they want and when they want it. Is this relatable or what?! When I really got the power of this instruction, it hit me pretty hard how much the grief I was feeling over why things were not happening when I wanted them to happen was because I was choosing my way over God’s way, my timing, over God’s timing and I’m missing an amazing gift!

Those of us who are standing for our marriages have the very same questions about our households. Like the Apostles, I have questions for God:

“When will You bring my husband to know You?”
“When will the Holy Spirit fall on my husband?”
“When will You bring my husband running home to me?”
“When will You…” etc. etc. etc.

The hard answer many of us don’t want to hear is we do not know and we will likely never know God’s timing in delivering upon His promises. God’s Word promises us that He will protect His covenant, that what He has joined, no man can separate and that His power can heal, restore and resurrect. We have proof of this in God’s Word, testimony after testimony shared by people throughout history (John 1:1) of what God is capable of and what His promises tell us. God has also promised us in these very verses in Acts, the gift of the Holy Spirit. A GIFT FROM GOD- AMEN!!

While we wait for God to bring our prodigal spouses home (and even after He does) God’s instructions are clear:

  1. Receive the gift of the Holy Spirit
  2. Go out and tell others about Jesus and what He’s giving me in my life.

Even as I write this with grief and sadness in my heart over the wandering spirit of my prodigal spouse, I can praise the Lord that I can find healing and peace in my soul because of God (Psalm 62:1). Yes, God sees your grief and PROMISES the gift of the Spirit which delivers peace, joy and goodness despite the worldly circumstances all around you.

The closer we grow to God, the more we are aware of when the enemy’s lies are creeping in (Luke 10:19). When I feel the lies of the enemy coming into my thoughts, words or actions I am grateful for the reminders of the promises of God. He will heal and restore (Isaiah 57:18-19). Through God’s gift of the Holy Spirit, we have access to the Fruits of The Spirit: peace, joy, patience, kindness, love, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5: 22-23).

When I feel sadness, I have access to never ending joy because of the Holy Spirit! When I feel pain in the words or actions of others, God’s kindness is with me. Praise the Lord for the Holy Spirit! When I want or yearn to have love in my life, the Holy Spirit’s love is covering me, in fact it’s living within me. Alleluia! When I grieve the unfaithful behavior of the one I chose to spend my life with, praise God, His faithfulness resides within the gift of the Holy Spirit despite the behavior of my spouse!

Praise be to God that His Word is clear and direct! His gift is with us and in the waiting as we allow God’s timing to work (Ecclesiastes 3:11) and for His good and perfect will to be done (Habakkuk 2:3). God is with us and He is pulling us closer to Him (Lamentations 3: 25-26).

I praise the Lord for all He has given me despite my sin, my choices and my circumstances! Other souls depend on the testimony of what the gift of the Spirit is doing in your life. Will you heed God’s calling to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit and share with others the goodness and works of Jesus in your life despite your perfectly imperfect circumstances? Will you praise God in the waiting knowing His promises AND His timing are perfect?

God bless,
