The Hope of Spring

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 (NLT)

As the weather warms a little each spring, I will usually have one very well-rounded robin that is the first to return. Robins usually only live in the wild five to six years so I know this is not the same robin who has returned year after year. But the appearance is always familiar. And he is usually alone when he first comes.

For years, this robin has been what I call my hope of spring. He recently retuned on a morning where the weather permitted open windows. I heard him outside my kitchen window, chirping loudly. He seemed to be trying to draw my attention to his song. “I’m here to tell you that there IS a spring coming. This winter season won’t last forever.” He always makes me smile. The weather is still chilly, the grass is still brown, there are no buds on the trees. But when I see this robin, my hope is renewed.

For some of you, this journey to a restored family has been a long season. One storm after another, setback after setback, detours and potholes. The season has been long and you may have given up hope of ever seeing a spring. But like the voice of that robin, Jesus is here to tell you there IS a spring around the corner.

“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NLT)

It’s easy for hope to slip away when the walk has been long. The faith and trust are still there, the prayer and Bible reading are still there, the forgiveness and love are still there. But hope seems to have packed its bags and left on a train to faraway. This is when we reach out to Jesus for renewed hope. All you have to do is ask.

“Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.” Matthew 7:7-8 (NLT)

Don’t allow the devil to steal your hope. Don’t let the length of your journey or the circumstances of your walk make you let go of your hope. Open your eyes, your ears, your heart and your mind to all the wonders and glories of this world that God has provided for you. Each season is a blessing, whether it be a season of sameness or a season of hope. Jesus has a plan for you and for your family. He knows the end from the beginning. And when it is just the right time, He will step in and turn things around. You can count on it.

I wonder what that robin is hoping for? A returning mate? Patches of green lawn to build a nest with? Bugs and worms to catch for food? Maybe he’s just hoping that someone will hear his song and that it will bring them renewed hope. It did for me.

May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and by his grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word. 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

God bless
