Men, has the Lord placed a devotional on your heart that you would like to share with other standers?

…the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness.  James 3:5-9 

You have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus Christ shed for you on the cross. His blood purifies you from all sin. All sin! Not some sins but all sins! Is your life a witness to the saving power of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross? When people look at you, do they see a difference? Do they see Christ living in your heart? Does your spouse see Christ in you? Be honest. Are you a viable witness to the living God? If a jury were to look at the evidence of your life, would you be convicted of being a disciple of Jesus Christ?

The tongue has the power of life and death…  Proverbs 18:21 

Are you speaking words of life or death in your marriage? Take an honest look at your life? Are you chained by the enemy? Look at your day. How much time do you spend in evil thoughts – being angry or bitter, criticizing, condemning, judging or plotting ways to get even with your spouse? How much time do you spend thinking of ways that you can be a blessing to your spouse? If someone asked your spouse these questions about you, how would she answer? Would the evidence show that you are speaking words of life into your relationship?

The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.  Proverbs 12:18 

Do your words to your wife pierce like swords or do they bring healing to her wounded heart? Are you quick to attack or do you control your tongue? Charlyne Steinkamp of Rejoice Marriage Ministries often reminds female standers to, “Zip your lips!” This admonition applies equally to men. Sharp words kill relationships. Harsh words crush spirits. Angry words inflame resentment and bitterness.

Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues.  Proverbs 10:19 

If you have been reckless with your words, ask God to take away all the anger, bitterness and resentment that you have for your spouse. Ask Him to give you words of love, peace and joy. There is no benefit in reviling your wife for sins she may be committing. Regardless of what she may be doing, you are to love her with the love of Christ. It is imperative that she see Christ in you.

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.  1 John 1:7 

To be an effective witness for Christ, you need to spend time on your relationship with Him. Prayer and daily scripture reading, especially the Gospels, are essential in building a close relationship with Christ. You cannot give your wife that which you do not have. The blood of Christ will cleanse you of all unrighteousness. You cannot serve God with bitterness and anger in your heart. Open yourself totally to His saving grace. Let the blood of Christ wash away your sins and fill you to overflowing with His divine love.

How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!  Hebrews 9:14 

It is critical that you understand that your wife is not your enemy. Satan is the great divider. He hates your marriage and wants to destroy it. You are in a war.

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.  Ephesians 6:12 

The devil has a vested interest in destroying marriage. If he can split you and your wife, he weakens the capacity for your children and society to believe in Christ’s love. You have to fight back. Your best weapon in the battle is “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Eph 6:17b). Pray scripture for your wife. Pray for God to bless her. Pray that God will use you as an instrument of healing and peace. Pray that God will guard your mind and heart from all evil thoughts and words.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers…whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.  Philippians 4:6-8
