“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.” Galatians 5:16-18
Are you living by the Spirit and choosing not to gratify the desires of your sinful nature? I knew after Bob and I were married that a spiritual conflict was going on in our home. I did not understand it, but I knew something was different with our marriage.
Whether you have been married for three months, three years, or thirty years, there may be a spiritual conflict in one or both of your lives. I pray that you will choose to crucify your sinful nature and live by the Spirit while you stand firm with the Lord for the restoration of your marriage. Never doubt the power of prayers for your beloved husband or wife.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. Galatians 5:22-26
We have an enemy who is out to destroy all relationships and marriages. His name is Satan. We must pray that your spouse will stand up against the enemy and choose to surrender their life to Jesus.
You must remind yourself daily that it is not flesh and blood (your spouse) coming against you, but the enemy is tempting your spouse not to forgive you or live a sinful nature. Recognizing who your enemy is will make standing and praying much easier for you. Satan is known as the father of all lies, a deceiver, and an accuser of the brethren. May I encourage you to memorize this scripture below:
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Ephesians 6:10-12
The spiritual conflict within each believer involves the whole person. We each have a body, soul, and spirit. The struggle is whether your spouse will surrender to the sinful nature’s mind or will, the carnal flesh, the unholy desires, submitting to sin’s control or whether they will yield their body, soul, and spirit to be under Christ’s dominion, living a life of Christ-likeness or righteousness.
Your prayer can be that your beloved spouse will choose to take control of their body, soul, and spirit, pick up their cross, and follow their Lord Jesus Christ, saying “no” to the sinful nature tempting them. The more they say “no” to sinful desires, the easier it will be between each temptation. Study more about the sinful nature by reading Romans Chapters 6-8.
There is victory and freedom through the Name and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Never stop praying that your spouse will take responsibility and stand up for what is right in God’s eyes and say “no” to the sinful desires within themselves.
“You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.” Romans 8:9-10
