Warning Signs

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. James 1:12

The person who invented those orange safety cones had a great idea. Every day, we are warned of potential roadway danger by a display of cones. In fact, our church even has a supply of them. Before every service or special event, volunteers can be seen lining up cones in the road’s median that separates church buildings from parking areas.

Most churches in our community have their own cones. A Sunday morning routine has become the “displaying of the cones.” They are used to warn of danger and keep us moving in the right direction.

How I wish someone could develop safety cones for marriages that would warn us of dangerous areas where our marriage could be harmed. Having cones in place years ago might have prevented the near destruction of our family.

I am sure there would have been cones around other relationships that started out harmless. Another set of cones would have been established around habits we didn’t even notice as wrong. A few more cones would have gone around poor attitudes. Each cone would have declared,

Late one afternoon, I sat on the edge of my bed behind a closed door and attempted to compose my thoughts for a phone call that had to be made. Earlier that afternoon, after more than two years of divorce, I had suddenly remarried my wife. Now, I faced calling that other woman I was involved with and telling her that I was again married to my covenant wife.

During the past years of remarriage, I realized that I had made a huge decision that day. Apart from my personal walk with the Lord, I had made the most important decision of my life. My decision to go home to a praying wife who stood for our marriage restoration affected my relationship with Jesus Christ and every other person in my life. God redeemed what I attempted to destroy by leaving my family.

The next time you see the cones going up around your church, be reminded once again to recheck the cones that need to go up around your precious marriage. Please don’t make the mistakes I once made.

It is always possible to go back and fix what is broken in your marriage. If you want more information, you can look at some of the resources on our website.

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.  1 Corinthians 10:13

God bless,
