When the Harvest Stops

Harvest this year was going so well. Usually, it’s Mother Nature who likes to throw a wrench into things and cause delays. Day after day of rain, or even an early snowstorm. That’s when the harvest stops – for a while. This year dry, warm conditions allowed most of the harvesters to be way ahead of schedule. But on one farm it was equipment that caused the stop. When one piece of equipment broke down, the harvest had to pause. Tractors stopped picking, trucks stopped hauling, and farmers stopped working the fields.

As disappointed as they were, these farmers had no intention of giving up the harvest. Why would they? There was still corn to be picked and hay to be baled. The harvest may have stopped for now, but it will go on. A full harvest is still planned.

Has this happened in your journey for a healed and restored family? Things were going well. It looked like the harvest was just about to be fulfilled. Expectations were high. Then the progress stopped.

It’s hard to see things come to a halt when it looked like the end was in sight. It’s almost enough to make you give up, isn’t it? But God’s delays are not denials. He has a plan for you and your family if you will not give up. This is the God who can see the end from the beginning. And He knows the best way to get you there.

Remember the story of the Israelites as they left Egypt for their Promised Land? God didn’t take them along the shortest path. He knew there were some things they were not yet ready to handle.

When Pharaoh finally let the people go, God did not lead them along the main road that runs through Philistine territory, even though that was the shortest route to the Promised Land. God said, “If the people are faced with a battle, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” So God led them in a roundabout way through the wilderness toward the Red Sea. Thus the Israelites left Egypt like an army ready for battle.  Exodus 13:17-18 (NLT)

You see, this God we serve is all-knowing and His plans are so much better than ours. If the Israelites had encountered a battle right away, they may have become discouraged and lost their faith. But God had a plan to cement that faith with one of His mightiest miracles. He had a plan to use the Egyptians for His glory.

Then the Lord gave these instructions to Moses: “Order the Israelites to turn back and camp by Pi-hahiroth between Migdol and the sea. Camp there along the shore, across from Baal-zephon. Then Pharaoh will think, ‘The Israelites are confused. They are trapped in the wilderness!’ And once again I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will chase after you. I have planned this in order to display my glory through Pharaoh and his whole army. After this the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord!” So the Israelites camped there as they were told.  Exodus 14:1-4 (NLT)

When your harvest stops it is not the time to stop believing and trusting. On the contrary, it is the time to trust God even more. He knows what lies ahead and He is directing Your path and the path of your mom or dad, to bring about the best blessing. Your job is to keep praying, keep loving, keep believing. He’ll be in charge of the outcome.

Farmers around here aren’t willing to settle for an almost-done harvest. Nope, they want the whole thing. They want the best. You should want the best too. The best for your family, the best for your mom or dad, the best plan that God has. Why settle for good when you can have great?

But the people of Israel had walked through the middle of the sea on dry ground, as the water stood up like a wall on both sides. That is how the Lord rescued Israel from the hand of the Egyptians that day. And the Israelites saw the bodies of the Egyptians washed up on the seashore. When the people of Israel saw the mighty power that the Lord had unleashed against the Egyptians, they were filled with awe before him. They put their faith in the Lord and in his servant Moses.  Exodus 14:29-31 (NLT)

God bless
