Mark 10 Nine

Are you happily married and looking for tips on maintaining a God-honoring marriage? This weekly devotional will give you encouragement for your marriage.

Who Is Your Guide?

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.  John 16:13

Do you have that friend who thinks they know it all? They believe they have all the right answers, all the best advice, they know what comes next. They cannot wait to share what they think the best course of action may be on a certain topic. Oftentimes, this leads us down the wrong path, and we end up making a bad decision. No one on earth has all the answers and guides to the things we will face in this life, but God promises there is One who does.

God gives believers the Holy Spirit, and in John, Jesus says that if we are willing to listen to the Holy Spirit, He will guide us. He knows what lies ahead and what problems and obstacles may come your way. He knows God’s plan for your life down to the smallest detail and is given by God to help guide us to the life God wants for you.

If you allow yourself to listen to the Holy Spirit, He will guide you in all areas of your life, career, family, marriage, finances, and so much more. God doesn’t leave us on earth to figure it out all for ourselves, although sometimes we think that is precisely what He wants us to do.

Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”  Isaiah 30:21

God made you, not with the desire for you to walk through life on your own, but to walk through life with the Holy Spirit guiding you. He does not want you to walk down paths of destruction, although we do that sometimes on our own, but he wants you to follow the plan He has laid out for your life. And the best way for us to know that plan is by staying in tune with the Holy Spirit. The book of Isaiah says, there will be a voice behind you, but we must be sensitive to that voice.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future,”  Jeremiah 29:11

God even has a plan for your marriage. He wants it to succeed, and He can empower you to have a marriage that glorifies God, but it takes surrender.

We cannot stay in tune with the Holy Spirit if we continue to do things the way the world wants us to. The world says that we should be the center of our own lives and have the ultimate say because we know what is best. If we live and think this way, we will never be able to hear the Holy Spirit’s guidance because we have ourselves in the place where the Holy Spirit should reside. We must die to ourselves and put our focus on Jesus and the plan that is laid out for our lives from the beginning of time.

If we are sensitive to the Lord’s instruction, we can see possible roadblocks in our marriage before they even become a problem. With the Holy Spirit’s help, it could be easier to determine the things that could be coming in between the marriage God has designed for you. Hearing and listening to the Holy Spirit could save you from so many heartaches in life and in marriage. But the question is, are you willing to give up control of your life to the One who created it all, or will you be stuck leading your own life, which will eventually lead to destruction?

For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.  Romans 8:14

God bless,
