Mark 10 Nine

Are you happily married and looking for tips on maintaining a God-honoring marriage? This weekly devotional will give you encouragement for your marriage.

You Can Hate Adultery and Love the Sinner

Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.  Hebrews 13:4

Too many marriages are ending in divorce because of adultery. Problems happen in a marriage, and then friends and family offer what they think is helpful advice. They may say things like,

“Move on with your life.”

“God has someone better for you.”

Do you ever hear things like this from well-meaning loved ones? Yes, the Lord does have someone better for you. Who is it? Your own husband or wife who has been touched and transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit. There is hope for a hurting marriage.

Here is a scripture that I often prayed for my husband, Bob, when we were encountering marriage problems.

“‘…to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me’.”  Acts 26:18

It seems like society today is winking at adultery. We must hate adultery, as it has attacked our churches and destroyed so many families.

I know the pain of discovering that your husband or wife has fallen into Satan’s trap of adultery. Please do not give up on your spouse. I gave up, but the Lord showed me that He had another plan.

Society has painted adultery as exciting, with no consequences. That is 100% wrong. There are severe consequences to the person who commits adultery, to the other person involved in the adultery, and the pain of the betrayal to the innocent spouse and their children. Sexual immorality can be stopped, and our world can turn from the promiscuous lifestyle that is so prevalent.

My son, pay attention to my wisdom, turn your ears to my words of insight, that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge. For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave.  Proverbs 5:1-5

If your marriage has been impacted by adultery, I am sorry. I know how much it hurts. Will you stand up and fight for your marriage? Will you become a prayer warrior?

Have you surrendered your personal life to the Lord, choosing to follow Him and wanting to be in the will of God daily? God has a perfect plan and purpose for you and your family, don’t give up. Pray that your husband or wife will be obedient to the Lord’s wooing, that they will repent, and that the Lord will cleanse their heart as they turn from their sinful lifestyle. We can hate adultery but love the sinner. Nothing is too hard for the Lord Jesus to do. Remember, He shed His Blood for their sins.

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin… Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.  Psalm 51:1-2, 7-10
