You Can Hate Adultery – But Love the Sinner

Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.  Hebrews 13:4

“Move on with your life.”

“God has someone better for you.”

Do you ever hear things like this from well-meaning loved ones? Yes, the Lord does have someone better for you. Who is it? Your covenant husband or wife who has been touched and transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit. Here is a scripture that I often prayed for my husband when he was a prodigal.

“‘To open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me’.”  Acts 26:18

It seems like society today is winking at adultery. We must hate adultery, as it has attacked our churches and is destroying so many families. We can make a difference in teaching our loved ones by telling them the consequences of adultery.

Her house is a highway to the grave, leading down to the chambers of death.  Proverbs 7:27

I know the pain of discovering that your husband or wife has fallen into Satan’s trap of adultery. Please do not give up on your spouse. I gave up, but the Lord showed me that He had another plan. When your spouse has been tempted into an adulterous relationship, they may say things such as: “I’m in love. I can’t live without them.” Never forget that the enemy has blinded and deceived them, so they are listening to the devil’s lies, not God’s truths. What husband or wife would leave their one-flesh spouse and children for a counterfeit?

Do you doubt that adultery is wrong? Read Proverbs Chapters 5-7, as the Bible clearly states what will happen to the adulteress or the adulterer if they do not repent and turn from their sinful ways.

Do you think that God will bless a relationship that was birthed out of adultery? We need to pray that all men of God will not marry these couples as they are condoning and legalizing their adultery. God still sees them married to their covenant spouse, while the courts may say they are divorced.

Our society has painted adultery as exciting, with no consequences. That is wrong. There are severe consequences for the person who commits adultery, to the other person who is involved in the adultery, as well as the pain of the betrayal to the innocent spouse and their children. Sexual immorality can be stopped, and our world can turn from the promiscuous lifestyle that is so prevalent.

My son, pay attention to my wisdom, listen well to my words of insight, that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge. For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave.  Proverbs 5:1-5

I pray that you will be careful not to harbor anger, unforgiveness, and bitterness in your heart. Lay your spouse and the other person at your Lord’s feet and allow the Lord to deal with their sin. Your responsibility is to forgive and love your enemies. Your Lord God knows what is best for you and your marriage. I pray that you will never give up on your husband/wife and pray for marriage restoration. Never stop praying for your spouse’s salvation so they will spend eternity with Jesus Christ.

For your ways are in full view of the Lord, and he examines all your paths. The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them; the cords of their sins hold them fast. For lack of discipline they will die, led astray by their own great follyProverbs 5:21-23

Adultery and sexual immorality can be avoided. We need to teach our young people the importance of purity before marriage. We need to discourage couples from living together before marriage. Pray that our churches will teach this along with obedience and disobedience to God’s laws and committing sins. If you are a parent, you need to teach your children the Word of God, so they learn right from wrong and know why it is wrong.

Will you pray for your family and beloved spouse, that they will turn their hearts toward their Lord Jesus Christ and toward home?

Have you surrendered your personal life to the Lord, choosing to follow Him and wanting to be in the will of God daily? God has a perfect plan and purpose for you and your family, don’t give up! Every day, pray that your husband or wife will be obedient to the Lord’s wooing, that they will repent, and that the Lord will cleanse their heart as they turn from their sinful lifestyle. We must hate adultery, but love the sinner. Nothing is too hard for the Lord Jesus to do. Remember, He shed His Blood for their sins!

Have mercy on me, O God, according to your unfailing love; according to your great compassion blot out my transgressions. Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin… Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones you have crushed rejoice. Hide your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquity. Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.  Psalm 51:1-2, 7-10

God bless,

Thank you Charlyne! Father open the eyes of our spouses, turn them from darkness to light, the power of Satan to God that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those sanctified by faith in Jesus.

As I was praying this morning, I realized that my prodigal husband believes that he is happy, joyous and free now that I’m no longer fighting him directly to keep the marriage together. Oh how Satan has deceived him into believing the lie is better than what God blessed him with. I will continue to pray for wisdom for my husband and a humble reverence for God. It’s so hard to accept I can’t change his mind but I know prayer works and God will work in him while he wallows in the world.
